Why was there just one Catholic President in America?

Is it because that there are more Protestants in America than Catholics? Thank you very much.
 
Because at it’s very core, America is anti-Catholic.

There are two good books out there, both titled “Anti-Catholicism in America”. They are worth a read!
 
Catholicism was hated and feared for most of US history. Most of the original settlers came from an anti-Catholic background based on their and their ancestors’ experiences in Europe. Catholicism became identified with waves of later immigrants and the established anti-Catholic sentiment became mixed up with anti-immigrant sentiment. It was viewed sort of like how many see Islam today.

In the early 20th century the KKK was huge, and many people joined it not so much to oppose African-Americans as to oppose Catholics. There was also a worry about the influence of the Church over Catholics in USA, and many believed that a Catholic President might take orders from the Pope.

This explains a lot of the anti-catholic sentiments.
 
I’m just happy the one we had was reasonably competent and not an embarrassment, given the shenanigans his father pulled to get one of his sons into the White House.

The Kennedys were not perfect, but given their background, the boys exceeded expectations and did a good job.
 
It is odd though that 25% of US Presidents have been Episcopalian when they have never been a huge majority. Statistically there should have been at least a couple more Catholkcs. Heck we’ve had 4 unitarian presidents and that group has never been very large.
 
Well, the US is a young nation - not even 300 years old. So there hasn’t been much time for a lot of variations to occur.

The US also is typically Protestant, and the further back in time you go, the more anti-Catholic the nation was.

And it’s possible we could have a “catholic” President in the near future - President Tim Kaine or President Joe Biden or President Nancy Pelosi - those are all possibilities for the 2020’s.

Yes, people came to America for religious freedom so they good do their protestant acts without being punished by Catholic government.
 
Yes they did. And most of the Framers and Founders were Protestant.

They’re around. My local GOP was infested with them. They always lurk in politics. But they’ve lost the mystery that they once possessed.
