Why we have to go to Mass on Sunday

Dr Scott Hahn has done the academic biblical research on covenants and published the information in a format available for general readers, in his book Letter and Spirit.

In it, he doesn’t address this from an apologetics standpoint, why we have to go to Mass on Sunday.

but, he does provide all we need to know about its significance, in that 1) we are commanded by Christ “do this” and 2) what we are “doing” is renewing God’s eternal covenant.

We should probably eliminate the word 'obligation" from our vocabulary, because it’s such a negative term. We should want to renew the covenant in our daily life and in our worship of God.

It’s also why we should dress appropriately for Mass on Sunday. It says twice in the Psalms that we should worship the Lord in holy attire.

At Sinai, the Israelites were told to prepare for receiving the covenant by bathing and washing their clothes. What we are doing, in Hahn’s manner of speaking, is attending the wedding banquet of the Lamb.
 
I don’t HAVE to go…I GET to go! Maybe it’s because I was away for 5 years and got time to appreciate it, but I can’t wait for the weekend to come because I GET to go to Mass!

Our Pastor did a wonderful homily at the Vigil Mass last night about the Holy Eucharist and how what we have access to is so special and something that exists nowhere else. Understanding that is key to changing an attitude of obligation to an attitude of desire.

What a wonderful attitude, thats how it should be, we should want to go and spend time at mass praying to god, receiving jesus in the eucharist etc lets face it, if we cant bear to do it now then how could we bear to be in heaven where it will be an eternity of praying, worshipping, etc,
 
We go to Mass on Sunday to receive Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. Jesus is the bread of life.

I’m with you. It is the privilege of being Catholic.
 
I think we can approach this from a “both/and” perspective. We can want to go to Mass because it is a wonderful thing, and we can also want to go because the Church has placed an obligation on us to attend Mass. Going to Mass, then, can be good in multiple ways: we are going out of love for God and a desire to be with Him, and we are submitting our wills to Christ by respecting the authority which He has given the Church.
