Hey Guys,
My question is about the scapular. It states that is anyone dies while wearing it that person will not suffer eternal flames. I know that by the Grace of God a person may enter Heaven, so I guess what I am trying to say is why should one wear a scapular when that person can still go to hell?

Thanks, and God Bless!

True only by Grace can one repent.
“The best known and most highly esteemed scapular, and the one most favored by the Church, and by the Blessed Virgin in many of her apparitions, is the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. It is adapted from the scapular of the Carmelite Order and represents a special Consecration to Our Lady under the title of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Those who wear it practice it a special devotion to Mary. In the past this was the Little Office of Our Lady, but today this can be commuted by any priest to the rosary. In addition, the person has a special entrustment of themselves to Mary for their salvation. This, in fact, has been promised to those who faithfully wear the scapular: “Those who die wearing this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire.” This must not be understood superstitiously or magically, but in light of Catholic teaching that perseverance in faith, hope and love are required for salvation. The scapular is a powerful reminder of this Christian obligation and of Mary’s promise to help those consecrated to her obtain the grace of final perseverance.”

It must be kept in mind that the Scapular is NOT a ‘charm’. It does nothing by its own ‘power’. It is an outward sign of an inner devotion to Mary, and only has power because God, through the Blessed Mother, has given it power. It is incorrect to say that the Scapular saves you, but permissible to say that we are saved by God through the blessing of the Scapular.

There’s got to be more to it than that

If I wore a Scapular, I really don’t think it alone would save me from the fires of hell

A scapular or other sacramental can only save us from Hell in the sense that it reminds us to have faith and lead a Christian life.

That’s the main benefit I get from mine. It helps to remind me of my commitment to lead a chaste and holy life. There have been plenty of times where I started to lose my temper or was tempted to sin when I felt that patch of cloth rubbing against that itchy patch of skin on my chest or back. I stopped what I was doing and rethought my actions. For me, it also serves as a reminder to pray.

anyone before they die can be saved from hell, all they have to do is receive the sacrament of confession or have a perfect contrition for their sins.the BVM promise is that those that at the time of death or wearing a brown scapular she will ensure they have the grace needed to achieve this.
in saying that those that simple wear it making no effort to change will unlikely preserve in wearing it either. I find that since I started wearing one, my attitude has changed dramatically and Jesus and the BVM is a regular thought of mine during any given day.
