Why were Adam and Eve punished so harshly?

Morality steers a person to the good. A commandment is oriented to the good of the person. The ultimate good of the human being is union with God. So the commandments have God as their end. They are not prohibitions for the sake of limiting freedom.
The LORD God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; 17but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
God creates good and gives human beings the ability to freely choose the good. The commandments steer Adam and Eve to God.

God didn’t want robots. Hence freewill. He wants us to chose Him. We were babes in creation. Simple commands for a Simple Spirit. See that tree=DON’T. The tree is an imaginary tree. The lesson is YOU ARE HERE, BEING CARED FOR AND BEING LOVED. This is all you need. The tree of KNOWLEDGE OF GOOD &EVIL. If you disobey, you’ll know everything.
Are we able to live today, according to His WORD? If you love Me, FOLLOW MY COMMANDMENTS!
The punishment was REALITY. Work hard for your survival. Bearing children is painful.
Paradise w a permenant vacation wasn’t enough. God gives us Self Control to help us stay in PARADISE on EARTH.
Do you think sex is for everyone or just married ppl? Do you look at having children as a blessing? When Christian values are being offered, would you chose that over a Death culture. Aborting babies isn’t the only thing where death occurs! Death of a society. The Rise and Fall of Rome, the Third Reich. Sexual sins mushroomed. Will we ever be able to see God working in STRANGE WAYS.?

If there were no option but to obey, our free will would not be free, we would be slaves of God or robots of God, not sons and daughters.

I don’t believe in the literal translation of the Genesis.
All of it? Or, maybe, just the beginning chapters…? 😉
I have questions. Why was that tree even there?
It represents something that God has told us not to do, but with regards to which, we want to make up our own rules and say, “nah… God’s wrong – it’s not bad, it’s good for me to do!”
Why are we generations later punished for that sin? I don’t understand. I didn’t do it.
We’re not. This isn’t punishment, it’s consequence.

If your parents grew up in affluent families, but (before you were born) turned to drugs, alcohol, and gambling, and lost everything, and ended up in dire straits… would you say that you were being “punished” for their sins? Or, wouldn’t it really just be the case that you share in the consequences of their actions?

Now… that might make you say, “but it’s still unfair!”, but…

…keep in mind: what our first human parents did was to sin against God. Do you sin against God? If so, then the fact that you also bear the consequences of sin is no less fair than the fact that Adam & Eve bore them, too… 😉

Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil even though God had told them not to. But before they ate how would they know that what they were about to do was wrong if they only found out Good and Evil by eating the forbidden fruit?

Isn’t there something whereby it’s only sinful if you know it’s sinful and deliberately commit the act? So Adam and Eve wouldn’t have known any better, so why were they harshly exiled from Eden?
THEY KNEW IT WAS SINFUL!

Like us {humanity} they were RATIONAL creatures.

They lived a literally PERFECT existence; with no wants and NO needs. GOD had provided EVERYTHING for them; and desired to test their gratitude to GOD for doing so by providing the opportunity to CHOOSE Good over Evil. There were a ZILLION “apple” trees they COULD eat from and only ONE they SHOULD NOT

Gen 3:1 " Why hath God commanded you**, that you should not eat of every tree** of paradise? verse 5 "For God doth know that in what day soever you shall eat thereof, your eyes shall be opened: and you shall be as Gods, knowing good and evil."

THE ONLY THING THEY LACKED WAS ACTUALLY BEING GOD

Their sin was not eating the apple; it was desiring to BE GOD

They freely choose EVIL over Good. They choose Evil OVER GOD!

That my friend is the correct understanding.

Keep asking questions that’s a good way to learn and pray very much,
Easter Blessings,
PJM
