Why were they handing out Phyllis Schlafly Reports at the TLM?

Does anyone know? I’m not a regular at a traditional Mass and I was handed these reports, as were all people leaving Mass and I was trying to figure out why? I looked up information on her on the internet, but I still can’t figure out why they hand these out at Mass?

ohhhhhhhh, ok. Hmmmm. ok. I posted a thead awhile back about how there were no Hispanics at this traditional Mass so for those of you who read it (I won’t discuss the topic again) I wonder if this is connected to the issue. She, Schlaffly, is against illegal immigrants isn’t she? I mean, not personally but her policies are to not allow amnesty or other rights for illegals. Perhaps if this Mass allows the distribution of this material it could allienate certain people from the Mass.

Now tell me, is it normal for Traditional Latin Masses to be distributing political material?
I’ve been to quite a few OF parishes and never been handed political material and these same Masses are mostly Hispanic in populace.

Is it really a coincidence that the TLM has no Hispanics, and it distributes political material that is hostile to illegals.

(I live just N. of the Mexican border, for those of you not familiar with my first post).

Well…this is looking very fishy if you ask me. Not so good for the TLM in my humble opinion.

I don’t like this practice of handing out Schlaffly material at any kind of Mass-Traditional or not. I feel this country-or at least its churches-should welcome the stranger with open arms. The illegal immigrants who come up from Mexico have a hard time making it in their home country and try to better themselves and their families by finding work here. When you attend Mass you’re visiting Jesus and Jesus wants to welcome everyone to His church. Whether or not we should send the immigrants back to Mexico isn’t something to be bothered with at Mass; we should at least wait until Monday to bring the politics into it.

We can certainly pray for the immigrants whether we want them to go home or help them toward a better future. But this is no reason not to welcome people in church. God loves the Mexican immigrants as much as He does the English speaking US citizens.

One solution I haven’t seen suggested-at least for the government-US or Mexico-would be to help the Mexican economy and provide opportunities for Mexicans on their own soil. And I’ve also heard of people pushing others-including indigenous people off their land. In the US we forced our first Americans off their own land and onto reservations. And I’ve heard of big businesses stealing the family farms and making people “tenants” on land they once owned. If this happened in Mexico-especially if this country had a hand in this industrialization-then we should help repair the damage and enable Mexican families to provide for their own needs by having their own farms and businesses.

Also, when I hear of Phyllis Schlaffly, I think of something she said a while back about some law that should be passed. She thought the wife should stay home and not pay into Social Security-or something like that-and that her husband should be the one working and supporting her. (I think she wanted some fund for retired women or widows, if I remember right.) It would be ideal if the woman can stay home and take care of the kids while papa goes to work and makes money to support the family.

:(But it doesn’t always work out that way. In fact we have a lot of battered wives in this country who need to be able to support themselves so they’re not tied to such a man. (Sorry, I’m off the subject.) And in some families which have very loving non-abusive men, the woman may still need to work. Just like with the immigrants coming in from Mexico, we can pray for families that are here legally that they can be strengthened and that family members don’t abuse each other. We can also support shelters and other programs that assist abused or abusive individuals and their families.

I do believe our immigration laws should be respected and enforced.

But there’s no human law that canno be changed, is there?

Mexico’s own immigration laws are much stricter than ours. And it has armed its southern border with Guatemala.

Wouldn’t Mexico scream blue murder if we were to do likewise?

I am of two minds on this issue. While I agree that we should be welcoming to all who come to the US insearch of a better life or just survival. (I live in Texas not far from the border myself) I really think that the newcomers should at least try and assimilate and learn English.

But what I see happening is far different from assimilation it is more like trying to move the border to the north, it has gotten to the point where it is rare to hear English spoken in public anymore, it seems like it is less assimilation and more like invasion. I think if people want to live in America they should be American and fly the American flag instead of the flag belonging to some foriegn country. Even when shopping locally it can be difficult to find help who speak English.

Now to be completely fair I too descend from foriegners myself from Ireland and France. Imagine the mess that would have been if they had refused to learn English, instead demanding that everyone speak Irish Gaelic or /French to them, and demanding that government documents be printed into seperate ethnic languages.

We would not have a single nation but a country massively divided into seperate ethnic enclaves.
 
The Church doesn’t (and shouldn’t) be distributing political material such as this. You might want to bring it up with the pastor, as the parish in question could get in hot water re: tax codes etc.

I do think people who move here should try to speak English. But in a lot of countries people do speak more than one language; we’re the exception. I read a joke that went, “What do you call a person who speaks 2 languages? Bilingual. What do you call a person who speaks 3 languages? Trilingual. What do you call a person who speaks only one language? An American!” I do recommend that everyone in the United States at least try to learn the following 3 languages: English, Spanish, and American Sign Language for the Deaf. And Latin would be a good one for many of us to learn, such as those of us who attend the Latin Masses.

I thought I’d add that I had grandparents who came over from Italy and they learned English. I also had great-grandparents who came from Bavaria (the part of Germany that our current Pope came from.) I didn’t know these great-grandparents but they could have learned to speak English-I know my grandfather did.👍

Thats what I thought. If it doesn’t pertain to church doctrine or faith or teachings, then it shouldn’t be there. But I don’t know if I was right thinking that or not?🙂 That was the impression I had.

I would hate for people to use the Catholic Church as a vehicle for their own political agendas. :eek: Lord knows that’s never happend before.

No, I didn’t even know what they were but I took them because they were handed to me.

What do immigration laws have to do with the Mass? I’m just wondering.

Do you think, that what you think about Mexican immigrants, has its place in the Mass? I mean, I’m having a difficult time getting the connection between Catholic dogma and immigration.

I think it has nothing to do with the Mass, but talk to sparkeelee, I was responding to her post.

I wonder, can we find out if they were distributed by that church’s people or just by others taking opportunity of a free audience? I’m thinking of another thread (forgot which site now) awhile ago where papers were passed out promoting alternative churches. They were distributed by a non-Catholic group as the people left Mass. You might want to mention it to the Pastor; it is disturbing.

I humbly hope you’ll not judge the TLM by activities at one church – or have these pamphlets been handed out at other Latin Masses? I’m Hispanic as are various others that go to our church. There’s been nothing like that passed out here. Never heard of this Phyllis lady anyway.

She’s a conservative Christian leader and founder of Eagle Forum, a Republican Women’s group.

Three ironic things:
  1. She has an openly gay son.
  2. She attends Holy Transfiguration Melkite Church when she’s in DC…
  3. She ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1976.

What you just said about the non-Catholic group passing out papers to people leaving Mass reminds me of something that was said about anti-Catholic groups passing out propaganda at the World Youth Day in Sydney.

It’s not appropriate for any Catholic church to hand out political material. In fact, it could get the church is trouble legally and with their taxes.

I have a feeling that the people with the pamphlets thought they would find a sympathetic ear among the Latin-Mass goers, which is a very sad statement. (Especially since you say this Mass is very segragated for whatever reason.)

As others have stated, I would ask the Pastor of the church. Even if it was a political brochure you agreed with, it wouldn’t be appropriate to hand it out on church property. He will hopefully tell you that this wasn’t planned and he’ll let the folks who were doing it that they need to stop.
 
My heavens, is Phyllis Schlafly still alive??!!!?? She wasn’t young back in the '60s when I last recall hearing anything about her . . .

Jesus did tell us to “Love one another as I have loved you.” Jesus wants us to love others and He loved us enough to die for our sins and offer His own body and blood. One of the times our Bishop came to this end of the diocese and celebrated Mass at my church he did talk about his support of the immigrants. He told us his own parents came from Ireland and that he was born in the US. That makes him the son of immigrants and a US citizen.

Many Mexicans are Catholic and have the same obligation to attend Mass as Catholics who are US citizens. So if you don’t like what my Bishop and I are saying in support of the immigrants-as fellow human beings that we need to love-then your opinions about the Hispanic immigrants should be omitted from the pulpit and from any media given out about this near the doors of a church!

I served on a social justice commission at another parish I belonged to, helped out in different ways, and attended meetings and classes pertaining to social justice. I even represented that parish at the Center for Peace and Nonviolence and tried to join the Catholic Worker. So I was a supporter of the church’s “best kept secret” before getting involved with the Traditional Latin Mass.

So the way I help others is just as important as what kind of Mass I go to. I’m sorry if I’m confusing you on these two issues of dogma and immigration. I know that having people sneak into this country is a challenge we have to face, but we should pray for them not pass out “Schlaffly” literature at the church entrance. When the issue of abortion gets mentioned in church, not only do we speak against the killing of the unborn, we pray for the women who are in danger of having an abortion and “pro choice” politicians like President Obama. I’ve never heard of anyone using the pulpit or circulars near a church entrance to send such women or politicians to the moon.
