Why won’t the Protestant non-Catholic Christians here, argue with the real Catholic Apologists at CAF?

I think it is a good idea. We could get one of the champion apologists like Hahn. If no real contender is available, we could find a local unknown…like me. No one would give me a chance of course. Perhaps Hahn would not properly train for the debate, take me for granted.
I have had debates, mostly local, won some, lost some.
Anyway, I could find an old time Protestant apologist to train me; someone who never got to take on someone like Hahn. I would have to convince him to train me but then he would warm to the idea.
We could hold the debate in Philadelphia maybe. I would go the distance with him; hold my own. Prove to myself I am not a bum.

Because it is more fun arguing with each other.

Duh.

WE have had A LOT of well educated non-Catholic posters. I am thankful for it. I think you attract a different kind of religious poster on a CAtholic site.

Besides, if they only wanted to beat up the pros, who will fight me? 🤷
What you said here is not only charitable but very classy. Likewise I know a few very intelligent and well versed devout Catholics locally. They are very interesting to dialogue with. This is how I ultimately learned that my main disagreements with the RCC are the Marian dogmas and the papacy.

Ain’t gonna be no rematch…ain’t gonna be no rematch 😛

What we forget so many times, is that most of the “professional” apologists were at one time amature guys learning the faith. One day, we might look back on this site and say “See how the Titans used to fight each other?”

Thanks for the complement

Although I’m not Protestant, I’d like to add a few thoughts to this thread.

First since I was away from the Catholic Church (Yes I"m a cradle Catholic) for over 20 some years, I do understand where some of the Protestant thoughts are coming from, not that I agree with all their thoughts, but I do understand why some of their answers are the way they are.

They are just like Catholics in one sense, they only know what they are taught. If they were raised, “Craddle Protestants” they don’t know any other way. (by the way I’m not knocking our Brother and Sister Protestants, just stateing a fact.)

It did me a whirl of good in a lot of ways to be away from the Catholic Church, for now I can understand some of our Protestant brothers and sisters better, their point of view of what they have been taught. But I must confess, being blessed as a Craddle Catholic and having gone through CC until 12th grade, I never could “accept” a lot of their teachings, but at least I can understand why they may not accept all the Catholic Teachings.

I would like to suggest to a lot of our Brothers and Sisters that are Protestants, it would do you a lot of good to “Study” the Catholic Religion. No I’m not trying to convert you, not at all. But it would help “bridge the gap” in understanding each others Religion. It would help each Protestant to know what we “really” believe as Catholics and not what their church is teaching them we believe.

Now I know many, (maybe not all) Protestants won’t take the time on their own to find out what we, as Catholics really believe, it’s eaiser to let someone else teach them/us. I know this for a fact, as I did just that. I learned what the Protestants Churchs think of the Catholics from Studying with them and their material in their Bible Studies and also by attending their churchs.

True it’s a challenge, to take the time to really study the Catholic Religion but one worth taking. After all, just what if, what your church is teaching isn’t all the Truth? And truely what do you have to loose by taking the time to Study the Catholic Faith? It doesn’t mean you have to become Catholic.

After all I spent 20 plus years going to Protesent Chruchs, studing with them in Bible Studies, being involved in their church, and yet I found, them to be friendly, true I learned a lot, but I also knew what they didn’t want to teach and when I’d ask a question about some things, they would always tell me it wasn’t important, or they’d beat around the bush on the topic.

This was lead me back to the Catholic Church…the fact they didn’t want to talk about all the Truths…just part of them. (I don’t say this to offend anyone, yet I know both sides and what is missing.)
Hello adelore,

This is a great post! Thank you! There have been some other posts here, which were excellent as well.

Thank you everyone, I have enjoyed every post here… so far.

Now you two stop that, you’re supposed to hate each other. :tsktsk:

I don’t know what you are saying Jimmy. I would love to hear responces from Keating and Hahn and others who are actually trained. Do they post here?

I know. But it is the Advent time, when we begin to look inside to see if we are ready for Christmas. In other words, a time for cease-fire whereby we can stockpile heavy ordinances to unload on each other when the weather breaks 😛

Good Point! 👍

The way I read the OP is, a Protestant (or Orthodox) poster could quote a passage from Hahn or whoever, then say "Here’s what wrong with this … "

For example.
Oh.

Then because I am neither smart enough nor ambitious enough to do something like that.

Obviously.

Because it would achieve no purpose but to place a wedge of mistrust between one another. I start from a much different place than a Catholic apologist would start with “history”…I start in a much different place than a Catholic apologist would start in regard to scripture. I start in a much different place than a Catholic apologist would start in my understanding of the nature of God and the message and work of Jesus of Nazareth.

I do not choose to “debate” with “real Catholic apologists” any more than choosing to debate with a “real Mormon apologist” or a “real Orthodox apologist.”

We have little basis to begin such an enterprise and reach any consensus…that’s about as simply and truthfull as I can state it.

Well, I guess that’s alright then, so long as you’re not trying to spread peace around. 😃

BTW, have any of you seen “Joyeux Noël” (2005)? If you haven’t, I highly recommend watching it.

If I may I’d like to point out some things about the question at hand.

Why won’t the Protestant non-Catholic Christians here, argue with the real Catholic Apologists at CAF?

First things first.

All Non-Catholic Christians are our Seperated Brothers and Sisters. (it only makes sense we’d want to share our beliefs, not argue and brow beat someone into believing the way we do.)

The Truth’s of the Catholic Church have stood the test of time. No other Church has been around for over 2,000 years (except for the Jews of course) If a person was to Really search out the “History” of Jesus and the “Church” He started, it would lead them back to the Catholic Church. Simple as that. There is no other Christian Church that can make such a claim as to have been around for so many years.

Now “Who” in today’s world can honestly say that their “Church” handed down the teachings of Jesus from back then? Were any other Christian Churchs around back then except the Church (Catholic, which means Universal) that Jesus started? Of course not. (take the time and do your own Church’s History and find out how your Church got started and why they “really” broke off from each other, or the Catholic Church to begin with)

The History of All Non-Catholic Christian Churchs show they broke off first from the Catholic Church and then more break offs from each other…this is how we got to have so many Non-Catholic Churchs today.

With that said, do keep in mind, most of your Non-Catholic Chruchs are truely teaching things/beliefs that came from the Catholic Church to begin with. (Just your Churchs didn’t take all the teachings with them.) This is what makes Non-Catholic Chruchs our “Seperated” Brothers and Sisters. The very foundation of your Churchs beliefs truely came from the Catholic Chruch. (Or it wouldn’t be a Christian Chruch.)

Do we really need to have anyone Argue with a Catholic Apologists? Not really. Jesus said to “Seach the Scriptures daily.” So truely each of us should be doing just that…

Now if each person were to really Seach the Scriptures Daily and take a good look at all Scriptures…(by the way many years ago, the Prodesent Bibles had the same books the Catholic Bible has, when they first broke off from the Catholic Church, then years later they removed some of the books from the Bible.)

That right there should cause anyone to have ???'s After all it’s plainly said in the Bible, no one is to Remove or Add to Gods word. Taking out books, because “a group of men” later decided they shouldn’t be in the Bible…would cause me alarm…what don’t they want me to read and why? (and just for your information, you will find that some of the missing books in the Prodesent Bible, that the Catholic Bible has Jesus even refers back to, but of course you can’t read that as the Prodesent Bible doesn’t have these books. So if Jesus refers back to some of “the missing books” must be they should be in the Bible.) Just thought you’d like to know.

I for one don’t believe in Arguing with anyone on “Religion”. I do belive however that we should “Study the Scriptures Together”.

Each person has to keep one thing in mind…our lives here on earth is not forever. If Heaven and being in Heaven are anyones goal…(which most of us want that) then finding **All the Truths **should be the most important thing in our lives. What’s to Argue about there?

Start with the missing books of the Prodesent Bible. Go to the Libary and check out a Catholic Bible and read them. (It won’t cost you anything) and see for yourself.

Well, I guess that’s alright then, so long as you’re not trying to spread peace around. 😃

BTW, have any of you seen “Joyeux Noël” (2005)? If you haven’t, I highly recommend watching it.
I have. I agree 100% 👍

Well then, Jimmy, who are the real apologists here at CAF?

The professional ones can only be found in the Ask An Apologist forum, and no debate takes place there.

Otherwise, there is no way of telling (even in the Apologetics forums) whether someone is a professional apologist, an amateur apologist, or does not consider themselves an apologist at all.

Personally, I believe that anyone who tries to explain and defend their faith is an apologist. Some are more informed than others - but most posters here are trying to practice apologetics.

That pretty much makes the answer to your question be “They already do!”

bless you,

Ruthie

Mainly, because apologetics is not about arguing. It’s about defending the faith in the midst of the secular world.
Catholic Apologists’ defend Catholicism against Protestant errors…among other things.

Jim,

Two things:
  1. The staff apologists here at CAF are not here to argue with non-Catholics. They are here to provide resources and answers to Catholics who encounter the arguments of non-Catholics.
Try calling in to the radio program with objections and see how much air-time you’re given.
  1. I have personally encountered a good number of really well equipped Catholic apologists including Scott Butler. I have also read a lot of books, including “Rome Sweet Home” by Dr. Hahn, “Evangelical is Not Enough” and a number of books by Knox, Chesterton, Ray, etc. I have not yet been convinced by them but they have given me a better sense of the internal consistencies of Catholicism such that I have softened significantly in my personal attitude toward it.

.
What does this have to do with anything?

Go and read the articles on the home page here and then come back and tell me what you think. BTW, I’m not a staff apologist.

Peace
