Hi, I was on campus today and a friend showed me this video “disproving” God. I had good answers to some of the questions, but a few had me tongue tied. I was wonder if anyone else could shed some light on the questions brought up in the video?

Heres a link to it: whydoesgodhateamputees.com/video10.htm

It’s still kind of bothering me that I couldn’t come up with a good argument (especially for stuff like the question about starving people in Africa), so replies would be nice. I’m only in RCIA right now, but I’m trying!

Thanks!

ps, I don’t really understand the rules for posting links here, so I’m sorry if I did not do it properly.:o

I had a great post but Internet Explorer ate it, and when you push the back button you lose everything you typed. That’s what I get for not using Opera…

Anyways…

The reason why they cannot understand this is that atheists see no point to suffering. As life is all that there is then you to have pain and suffering is something to avoid at all costs. Catholics on the other hand see that Jesus made suffering something that is good instead of something that is foreign to us.

This sanctification of suffering requires us to accept it and use it for our well being, we make up what is lacking in Christ’s suffering for the sake of the Church. Col 1:24

It is my personal opinion that God healing people is extremely rare as God sees us differently than we see people. It is much more compassionate for God to allow us to die as He sees us as eternal beings and we would be going to Him. This is why God doesn’t heal amputees as people do not ask to be healed to do His will but to not suffer which is just rejecting suffering. This also is seen in the amount of verified healing miracles which is very small.
Once in a while God will do a Fatima, but miracles usually are only done for exceptionally faithful people, such as St Lucia. Most athiests are pretty sinful people and are not seeking God’s will at all, heck many Christians are the same, this is why I personally am very sceptical of healings of people that are reported.

Speaking of amputees… St. John of Damascus…

"In spite of his Christian background, his family held a high hereditary public office with the Moslem rulers of Damascus, lead by caliph Abd al-Malik. He succeeded his father in his position upon his death; John de Damascene was made protosymbullus, or chief councilor of Damascus.

It was around his term in office that burst of insurgence by the iconoclasts began to appear in the form of heresy, actions which disturbed the Church of the East. In 726, in disregard of the protests of Germanus, Patriarch of Constantinople, Emperor Leo the Isaurian issued his first edict against the veneration of images and their exhibition in public places. A talented writer and in the secure surroundings of the caliph’s court, John de Damascene initiated his literary defense against the monarch in three Apologetic Treatises against those Decrying the Holy Images. This was the earliest of his works and the one which earned him a reputation. Not only did he attack the monarch, but his use of a simpler witting style brought the controversy to the common people, inciting revolt among those of Christian faith.

Unable to punish the writer openly, Leo the Isaurian managed to get possession of a manuscript written and signed by John de Damascene, which he used to forge a letter from John to the Isaurian monarch offering to betray into his hands the city of Damascus. Despite John’s earnest advocation to his innocence, the caliph dismissed his plea and discharged him from his post, ordering his right hand, which he used for writing, to be severed at the wrist.

According to the 10th-century biography, his hand was miraculously restored after fervent prayer before an icon of the Virgin Mary. At this point the caliph is said to have been convinced of his innocence and inclined to reinstate him to his former office. However, John then retired to the Monastery of Saint Sabbas near Jerusalem, where he continued to produce a stream of commentaries, hymns and apologetic writings…"

Who knows… maybe God does heal amputees… 😃

This is the “Writing on the Moon” argument in disguise. If flesh is simply materialised, that is a type 1 miracle, or a violation of physical laws, and a rather public one. It would make atheism untenable as a philosophical position. Why does God not simply do this as a matter of routine?

The “Writing on the Moon” argument is one of the stronger atheist arguments, but it has some fairly obvious weaknesses. God reveals Himself as He is, not as He is not, and thus not as a bully.

You might also not that none of Jesus’ bones were broken. Even Jesus had the physical integrity of His body preserved through circumstance rather than by supernatural intervention.

Malcolm,

You make a rather good point which I would like to address.

There are two options to the “writing on the moon” phenomenon. It can happen regularly or frequently, or it can happen irregularly and rarely.

If it happens regularly or frequently, the miracle is simply classified as a previously-unknown physical law and is no longer considered to be a miracle.

If it happens irregularly and rarely, well, the good atheist can simply ignore it or deny it until it fades out of the immediate public consciousness. Look at what they do with the Resurrection and with the miracle of the sun at Fatima.

So really, the atheists have an unbeatable racket.

To address the specific question of amputees, I should note that losing a limb is not the worst thing that can happen to a person. Jesus said specifically that it is better to enter Heaven with one eye or one hand or lame than to be cast into Hell in perfect physical condition.

That is a very good point… I’d often wondered that myself, but now it makes sense!

Gives new meaning to the saying “for those who have no faith, no proof is sufficient.”
