A few years ago, when I married, I was told gently but firmly that the beautiful secular love song I wished to use as my processional music was not appropriate for a Catholic ceremony. I acquiesced without argument. Recently I attended a Catholic wedding mass in a different state in which the song “With Your Love” by Journey was the processional music. I thought it would be rude to ask the bride how this came about, but I can’t help feeling like a “chump” for yielding so easily on this point in my own wedding. Has the Church changed on this position lately, or was it just “luck of the draw” that my parish of marriage was more conservative?
