Why would anyone want to become Catholic?

The Catholic Church: A dysfunctional family?

As a family, the Catholic Church has some “dysfunction.” So remarked Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, during his inaugural address as president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). In using what he wryly called “talk show vocabulary,” Archbishop Dolan attempted to open up discussion not only about why Catholics leave the church but also about the church’s mission in a purportedly “post-ecclesial” American society.
Archbishop Dolan’s remarks defied some expectations and fulfilled others. But there was a fundamental issue underlying everything—it was hinted at, alluded to, but never fully articulated. Just as one would expect in a dysfunctional family.
Archbishop Dolan’s election as president as of the USCCB came as a surprise. He vaulted over the conference’s vice-president, Bishop Gerald Kicanas of Tucson, who would ordinarily have been chosen on the basis on seniority. This led some commentators to surmise that America’s bishops had elected a “culture warrior” to do battle against dissenting Catholics and a faithless society.
In content and in tone, Archbishop Dolan’s address was not a call to arms to fight an external threat. Instead, it was an invitation to look inward. His remarks began by focusing on the phrase “love for Jesus and His Church must be the passion of our lives.” This love must be reclaimed at a time when fewer people realize that “Jesus and His church are One.” A challenging task, as Archbishop Dolan made clear, especially since the Catholic Church is perceived as a church of “sinners.”

I am really surprised that you are associating with the human race in general, considering how many murders, adulterers, thieves, rapists, brutal dictators, terrorists, etc. there have been throughout the history of mankind. Oh, and if you are an American, why would you claim allegiance to and live in a country that captured and enslaved millions, destroyed a whole culture of the native population, unjustly seized their lands and put them on the brink of starvation; wrote laws that oppressed women, and once considered a whole race of people as somehow less than human and tried to keep them (and still often do) in a near perpetual state of ignorance and poverty? Not to mention the fact that it’s laws permit the tearing of infants from the very wombs of those who should be protecting them and tossing millions and millions of babies into garbage heaps as if they had no more value than the flies that crawl on the heaps, one of at the most barbaric things that can be conceived of in human history.

Your line of thinking is highly illogical, very short-sighted, and just plain arrogant. Are you prepared to sequester yourself on an island somewhere away from your fellow human beings and all of their ugly history (Catholic, Protestant, atheist, ancient civilizations or whoever ) and deeds, just so you won’t be tainted by your country’s and mankind’s ugly history? Or are you brave enough to admit your thinking is flawed and you can, as millions of Catholics do every day, admit to the sinful nature of it’s members and their mistakes and attempt to live up to the ideals and move humanity forward and work for justice and right past wrongs. Or are you content just to sit on your duff and pass blame and judgment on the Catholic Church and write insulting posts on CAF?

Being a Catholic is like a relationship; you stick with the one you love no matter what mistakes they make. I love the Church soo much. Her sons and daughters screw up, there is no denying it. But that fact dosn’t repel me at all, it draws me closer to my Mother Church because I want to teach her children the truth about what they believe so they can love Her too.

Having a nationality is very different from signing up to an organisation / party etc. As for being from the USA, you have my sympathies and I agree there is not much you can do about this, however you can vote and get informed, have a political agenda. You have the right to protest and get an education. The government I thought was voted in by a majority. I’m not sure how this analogy correlates. If I have offended anyone because I have questioned why you would choose to associate with a party that has been pretty evil in the grand scheme of things, then maybe it’s shame you feel because you are a blind follower and don’t actually have a valid reason. For those that do have a valid reason let’s hear it. I’m sure there are some of you out there that can definitively justify your allegiance. This is a public forum for discussion for why you would join up to the RC church. I think it’s track record is a fair nod against.

I DON’T choose to associate with murderers etc and I don’t think sharing a planet with them shows any allegiance to them at all. You are a nut!

I don’t believe you read this. I am having trouble picking through this self confessed ‘uneducated’ man’s diatribe. He results to calling the authors he is refuting swear words and uses personal attacks. The only section that is relevant to this discussion where he defends the Spanish inquition as being not that much of a blood bath as it is sometimes made out to be (p 217- 219). He is grossly misinformed. You can not compare the deaths by the hands of the church to how many children are killed by bicycles (p219).
I cant read ant more of this right now.

I see you claim to be a catholic (i assume roman catholic), however you can’t participate in this topic with reason? Why is it relevant what i personally believe or what religion i officially am. Unless you wish to resort to personal attacks… 🤷

So far the argument for the RC church and signing up is: (paraphrasing)

Which, whilst mildly humerous, is completely irrelevent to the discussion topic.

I thought this may be a place for intellegent discussion. Cheers for dispelling any questions i have about the CC. What a great representation you are.

I agree. I had the same question and hence how I found this forum. I was thinking about all the atrocities the roman catholic church has been responsible for over the centuries, why would anyone wish to be associated with it? The idea is repugnant.
