Why would God make people homosexual only to send them to hell?

I am hearing more and more of young people who are committing suicide because they are gay. They hate that they are gay and are afraid of what their families will think of them. I know what the Bible says about homosexuality but why would God make them with this disfunction only to send them to hell? How can I explain this to my children who have gay friends that are in distress?
