Why would satan and his followers rebel against an omnipotent god, knowing there was no chance they could win?

Why do tiny dogs bark at bigger ones that can gobble them up in a mouthful?

Why do weedy teenage boys take on big strapping ARMED security guards/police/soldiers?

Why do three-year-olds scream ‘it’s not FAIR’ at their parents when they’re made to do something they don’t want to do?

Pride, anger, lack of awareness of one’s own limitations, lots of reasons …

Well true, but we’re not talking about dogs, teenagers or babies. Angels, I’m guessing, are rather intelligent and knowledgable creatures. It wasn’t just a temper tantrum, it was a declaration of war.

Satan and his followers minds were darkened after their rejection of God. Now, they rejected God because they were given freedom, and Satan chose himself over God. Since it depends on the self, to surrender itself, in order to see God clearly, Satan at no time ever surrendered the self. This does not mean he was ignorant, but only that he rejected God (not in his essence, since he is seen clearly and cannot but be desired) through the lense, so to speak, of the self. That little voice of conscience, so to speak, which is God speaking to us, he scorned.

Why would human beings? Knowing we had no chance to win against God!
They had free will. We have free will.

Does anyone who truly believes in God (and hell) ever reject Him?

Obviously there are many unbelievers who “reject” God, but only because they believe they can “get away with it.”

I can’t imagine how Satan could think he could “get away with it,” since he knew the reality of the situation.

No, some non-believers dislike what they perceive God to be so much that they are actually willing to put up with the punishment of rejecting Him.

Just like some criminals happily bear whatever fine, jailtime etc they must because even though they know what they did will be punished under the law, they are nonetheless convinced that it was morally right.

For example, Dr Jack Kevorkian is convinced that people should be able to euthanase themselves or others under certain circumstances. He knows that what he believes in is currently illegal, but has on occasion gone ahead and done it or assisted in its happening anyways. Of course he’s been jailed and whatnot, but he did what he did because he believes he’s right and the law is wrong.

So does Satan, I’m sure. Like I said, pride.

It is said that Satan’s main sin is pride. Maybe Satan believes he has a chance, and he is blinded by pride that he doesn’t see that God is omnipotent.

Maybe Satan is just doing it out of spite. He turns God’s own creations against Him simply because Satan doesn’t like God, and turning God’s creations away from Him is all he can do.

It’s all speculation, nobody really knows.

Devil worshippers.

Satan; formerly know as the great angel Lucifer was once the most loved and cherished angels of God. I can’t quote right now in the writings of Saints who speak about the reason why Satan fell which most say it had to do with immense pride.

At some moment in eternity Lucifer had learned about God’s plan to create primitive humans and that God would place a part of himself in making a human soul. God also said that He would give human souls the spiritual chance to become even greater than the angels.

Lucifer was outraged about God’s plan and through the immense SIN of Pride was thrown out of heaven along with Lucifer’s followers immediately following their defeat after the Great War that broke out in heaven.

Ever since Satan (“Lucifer”) has waged his destruction of human souls by the same sins that got him thrown out of heaven. Pride being one of greatest of all sins.

Peace
Chris

I think hatred, pride, or wrath can overpower reason at times.

Actually…the more I think about it…it’d be the very nature of Satan to rebel against God despite reason, because to have such reason…to say “God is greater than me” would indicate that he, (Satan), hadn’t fully rejected God.

Satan believed he was greater than God. He truly believed this.

There is no room for reasoning in the way you stated because that would show the thinking of one who still acknowledged the omnipotence of God. Satan, upon turning his back on God, at that very moment, lost this ability to reason.

To truly reject God, is to believe that you can or are more powerful, and are greater than God. And to believe one is greater than God, is to believe God is not…for if God were, nothing could be greater than him.

He rejected God. And once he chose to reject God he became what we all know him as; for it was at that point - that moment - when he chose to turn his back on God, that he became cursed and accursed.

Satan and his followers rebelled against God because they knew they could win - up to a point! They knew - and know - God will not destroy beings He has made in His image and likeness. They have succeeded in their bid for complete independence. Their self-love brings them misery because it alienates others but they are prepared to pay the price in return for the pleasure and satisfaction of having no one to serve or obey. Even in this world we see how the lust for power destroys people.

To truly reject God, is to believe that you can or are more powerful, and are greater than God…
That’s what I’m wondering:

Did Satan and his followers really think they had a chance of victory when they plotted their rebellion? Was it a calculated risk chosen and lost?

Or was it just a symbolic, yet knowingly futile gesture to fight while knowing defeat was inevitable? Was it choosing their personal morals and values over submission to God’s?

You are right. All evil is a form of insanity but it is culpable because it is not pure ignorance. Those who reject God know it is wrong to do so.

I have just unwittingly anticipated your questions! 🙂

Because he is an idiot.

Only an ignorant being would challenge God and think they could win against him.

However before God made him as an angel, God knew he would go against him.

So the question is on God… why would you create an angel who would betray you? Or if you do create him, why even make him going against you a possibility?

In my opinion yes…they did think they had a chance of victory…and it wasn’t symbolic. Of course they didn’t have a chance…but they believe/d they had a chance.

He created him, but like us…they have free will. Satan chose to turn against God. That was his choice.

God is God. All loving. All powerful. God doesn’t make slaves. God makes beings…angels…humans…all with free will…which in a way, proves his love. Only one who loves another, would allow them free will.

Because God needs nothing, therefore He made Lucifer (and everything else, good or bad) out of selfless love. According to St. Paul, as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 13, God’s love cannot rape, and therefore He does not demand to be loved in return.
