Why would we go to hell?

Yes, I get that. But his question was more complex than that. If I am correct, I believe he has not fully entered into the Church yet and may not have recourse at the moment to confession. If this is the case, that may complicate matters. That is how I understood his question hence why my answer was phrased in that manner.
Greetings Link0126,

I now understand why you answered the way that you did.

I present that it does not matter if one is in the Church or not, one is still held to obey the natural law. We all know it’s wrong to kill someone, to sleep with someone other than whom we are married to, and ect. If we are living our lives contrary to the natural law, which God has written upon our hearts, whether we believe in God or not [it does not do away with the objective reality of God or the natural law.] Then we will be condemend to Hell.

God Bless.

p.s. To the OP, under no circumstances think that becuase you are not in the Church and can’t get to Confession you will die in mortal sin. If a person outside the Church truly repents of his or her sins, turns away from those sins, and lives accordingly to God’s commands or [in the case of someone who does not know God and the Church] the natural law, then they have no reason to worry.

What i find frustrating is that there seems to be no clear answer on what constitutes mortal sin.
The teaching is clear according to the Catechisim of the Catholic Church, 2nd ed. (1997):
CCC #1857
For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met: “Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent.”

Hi i was wondering why do some say that we either go to hevean or hell we know that we all get salvation eventually because of what Jesus did and promised so why would we go to hell ?
thanks chuck
People go to hell if they reject Christ and don’t want to repent of sin. So it’s like - He’s offering them salvation, He wants to save them, and they are saying no. God gave us free will, and taking a person to Heaven forcibly, might not even work… God is holy and can’t be united with sin, and if a person wants to keep their sins rather than repent of them, and finds themselves in Heaven, which is total union with God, - it would be incredibly painful for them. So they would flee, to hell. Hell is basically a self chosen rejection of God.

I am still confused and don’t get it but what I am trying to say is why are we going to hell if we have mortal sins on our soul if we havnt had a chance to confess /repent to or are sorry and just starting to stop the sin and overcome it ?
What if we accept gods love and go his way away from sin and still have mortal sin on our soul and die ?
R we going to pergeroty or heven or not ?
Confession and repentance are two different things. You may have not had a chance to confess, but you can repent anytime at all. You might still struggle with overcoming it, but God knows if you are sorry or not (and you do, too.) Certain sins, such as sins that have addictive components, are very hard to overcome. As long as you are truly sorry and keep trying, God understand the addictive part. You don’t totally have free will with an addiction.

Anathema, your post is correct.
If one dies in UNREPENTED mortal sin, one goes to hell , according to church teaching.

What i find frustrating is that there seems to be no clear answer on what constitutes mortal sin.
especially the catholic answers forums.
Note: Per scripture, all sin, not types or classifications, separate us from God. It is only by seeking forgiveness for our sins and turning away/repentance from the occasion of sin that God accepts us. For it is thru forgiveness and repentance, a choice, that Jesus Christ, who died for our sins, can shield us from God’s Judgement of damnation to Hell. Note: Paul talks about In Romans of those who continue to live in sin being turned over to the consequences of their continuous rebellion against what it is right in God’s eyes, Hell!

Greetings RobertP876,

Hi. I do have a question. How do venial sins work according to Scripture? I know that there is no conflict with the Teaching Magisterium of the Church with Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture.

Venial sins do not separate one from God like mortal sins do. It can weaken one’s relationship with God, but not sever it as the mortal sins. Venial sins can lead to mortal sins. I know venial sins are a classification of sins, but venial sins are sins nevertheless, but they do not separate one from God.

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church of which Blessed Pope John Paul II said “that the CCC is a sure norm of teaching the Catholic faith.”
#1861 Mortal sin is a radical possibility of human freedom, as is love itself. It results in the loss of charity and the privation of sanctifying grace, that is, of the state of grace. If it is not redeemed by repentance and God’s forgiveness, it causes exclusion from Christ’s kingdom and the eternal death of hell, for our freedom has the power to make choices for ever, with no turning back. However, although we can judge that an act is in itself a grave offense, we must entrust judgment of persons to the justice and mercy of God.
#1863 Venial sin weakens charity; it manifests a disordered affection for created goods; it impedes the soul’s progress in the exercise of the virtues and the practice of the moral good; it merits temporal punishment. Deliberate and unrepented venial sin disposes us little by little to commit mortal sin. However venial sin does not break the covenant with God. With God’s grace it is humanly reparable. “Venial sin does not deprive the sinner of sanctifying grace, friendship with God, charity, and consequently eternal happiness.”
While he is in the flesh, man cannot help but have at least some light sins. But do not despise these sins which we call “light”: if you take them for light when you weigh them, tremble when you count them. A number of light objects makes a great mass; a number of drops fills a river; a number of grains makes a heap. What then is our hope? Above all, confession.

God Bless.

Those who go to hell never “get salvation.” They are eternally damned, which is why we should pray for the poor sinners and work to convert them to the true Church. You may be thinking of purgatory, where those who have not, by penance, removed the temporal punishment due to sin, even though they are in a state of grace when they die. They remain in purgatory until “purged” of impurity by fire. “Nothing impure can enter into Heaven.”

Well i thought it did because “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”.
When you quote Scripture you have to keep it in context. Continue reading past St. John 3:16.

“[16] For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting. [17] For God sent not his Son into the world, to judge the world, but that the world may be saved by him. [18] He that believeth in him is not judged. But he that doth not believe, is already judged: because he believeth not in the name of the only begotten Son of God. [19] And this is the judgment: because the light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than the light: for their works were evil. [20] For every one that doth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, that his works may not be reproved.”

But what in the last second of your death you commit a mortal sin for whatever reason becuase it’s pretty easy to commit one why Would you go to hell what I’d you we’re struggling with that sin for years what you happen then would u go to puergeatory ?

You can make a perfect Act of Contrition if conditions don’t allow you to get to a priest to confess your sins and receive absolution. But, if you have mortal sins on your soul, say an Act of Contrition and go to confession immediately or as soon as possible. And go as often as you can if you need to. You receive graces in the Sacraments of Penance and at Communion that will make you stronger in your fight against sin. But you can’t throw up your hands and say “I can’t give it up right away, I need to ease away from mortal sin.” You, with help of the Saints, Our Blessed Mother and our Lord, and with the Church and the grace provided by its Sacraments and sacramentals, are waging a war for your own eternal soul.

Not only is it POSSIBLE that we could go to hell if we are in a state of unrepentant mortal sin, but that is GOING to be the reality.

No way to soften this truth.
I was going to mention that as well. If you die in mortal sin there is no doubt that you will go to hell. Where doubt enters in is whether the person in question died in mortal sin or not. The sinner, at the point of death, may have been granted a chance to make a perfect Act of Contrition. We are not the judges, thankfully.

You have to understand what mortal sin means to answer that question. Mortal sin is not a minor slip. A mortal sin has three requirements. 1) It must be a “grievous” sin. 2) It must be committed with full knowledge (the sinner has to know it is a mortal sin) and 3) It has to be committed with the deliberate consent of the sinner. If these three conditions are met, the sinner knows that he has purposely turned his back on God and offended Him grievously. That results in spiritual death, the loss of grace.

We are tempted at the time of death, which is one reason why we faithfully pray the Rosary. Every time you say the Hail Mary, you are asking our Mother to help you at the time of death. “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us now and at the hour of our death.”

The thing about Perfect Contrition is that in order for it to be “perfect” you must be sorry solely because your sins offended God and that you are sorry for them. Trying to avoid going to Hell isn’t perfect Contrition.
