I’ll say! And it apparently isn’t at all uncommon, though becoming less so. There are a lot of nurses out there with the idea that babies don’t remember the pain, so it’s cool to just let them suffer. That’s ridiculous! Just because they won’t remember the pain when they are 30 doesn’t mean they should suffer in the moment. THat’s just cruel! Besides that, there’s growing evidence in pain management that when someone experiences significant pain, their brain doesn’t rewire itself right away once the cause of the pain goes away. They still feel like they’re in pain for a long time after. THe longer they are in pain, the longer it takes for their brain to rewire and the sensation of pain to go away. So babies can physically remember pain, even if they don’t cognitively remember the experience that caused it.
