Why is it that I am unable to find any couples halloween costumes that aren’t extremely dirty or hundreds of dollars a piece? If I could sew I would make our own but I am kind of lacking in the creativity area. It’s just so frustrating that all the cute costume ideas are expensive and the cheap costumes are yucky. Does anyone have any ideas on fairly inexpensive, creative couples costumes?
 
Well, Felicity, I’m giving away my age, but when I was an unmarried young thing many years ago, my sister, her husband, and I went to a Halloween party as the Coneheads (Connie, Beldar, and What’s-her-name.) We made our own costumes–my sister is an excellent seamstress. It was fun, we looked insanely funny, and our costumes were not suggestive in the least. I wish I had pictures for you. I think I remember that the cones and collars were easy to make.🙂
 
What I did one yr was buy a pair of medical scrubs and go as a dr. Maybe you can do something like that. And it costs cheaper than buying a real costume. They run anywhere from $15 to $50 as a top and bottom combo. You could go as dr and nurse or something like that.
 
There are plenty of ideas that could use things you already have in your closet or could get at the Salvation Army (or a resale type shop):
Hippie
Joggers/Athlete’s (must have headbands and water bottles, 😃 )
Nancy Drew and a Hardy Boy (preppy clothes and “frozen” hair, carry around appropriate books)
Thing 1 and Thing 2 (matching red sweat outfits with Thing 1 and Thing 2 written on them–do a google search for pics)
Fisher man/woman (hip waders, rubber boots, fishing poles, flannel shirts and jeans, bucket, fishing hat)

Family Fun (familyfun.com) has cute ideas for children that would work for adults, like the lego costume out of boxes.

Going to the second hand store and looking around might give you some ideas, too.

black pants and black turtlenecks. big boxes covered in white, with big black dots on the sides (arm and head holes cut out.) wear black berets.

cute and cheap.

My friend’s husband once went as an e-mail…he dressed in all black with a big e on his chest. 🙂

My in-laws did this once at a Halloween party (long before DH was on the scene). It was a big hit and I think they even won a prize. I have asked to see pictures but somehow MIL cannot produce any. :rolleyes:

In a similar vein, I was thinking DH and I could go as playing cards - King and Queen of Hearts 🙂
 
DD made a mailbox costume-blue tights and sweats, cardboard box painted like a mailbox, complete with official logo, the letter slot was where candy was deposited, she wore a red beret.

black cat–black sweats and/or tights w/modest shorts or skirt, make a tail by stuffing tissue in a black sock and pin it on, cut ears from black construction paper and staple to a black headband from the dollar store, mascara and eyebrow pencil for whiskers

cheap props and makeup abound at the dollar store

went to a halloween party with other teachers when DH was in public schools, and their union was on strike. He just wore a business suit and carried a briefcase, and called himself a federal mediator.

You can be almost anything you want starting from a sandwich board: 2 pieces of plywood held together by two straps (an old belt cut in two works great, then nailed down). Then paint it up to match your idea. You could be something sqaure shaped, like playing cards, or you can go crazy with a concept like “night and day,” or “ball and chain,” or whatever. SImilarly, if you can find two large boxes, you can add straps and turn yourself into just about anything square or rectangular: dice, kleenex, rubix cubes, legos…

Thrift stores usually have such an amassment of old clothes, that you can usually get an “era” costume if you just dig, especially cheesy 80s stuff, like punk rockers.

Thanks for all the great suggestions! I think we have narrowed our choices down to:

Johnny Cash and June Carter (he wears all black with slicked hair and I wear a 60s style dress with my hair flipped out)

Mario and Luigi (Blue overalls, boots, red long sleeve shirt for me, green for him, and hats)

Any of those sound good?

P.S. I like the “E-Male” costume idea but I read somewhere that I should glue paperclips all over me to be an attachment

We went as King and Queen of hearts when we were dating and won 3rd place…dressed nice and each used shawls as capes sort of…wore crowns and had a huge card round our necks made of bristol board…
 
Here’s a couple of ideas I’ve used in the past…Halloween isn’t my fav holiday but I usually have to dress at work (Recreation Therapist)

Tan/beige pants and a red polo shirt and a name tag with the red dot logo…Target Team member.

Red Sweat Pants, white oversized Tshirt or sweatshirt (depends on the weather), a yellow felt circle sewn (quickie hand stitches that can be easily removed) to the front of the shirt, a pair of cheapy red "devil horns…a “deviled egg”.
 
My husband and I won the prize one year at a party as no one could guess who we were. We put on white long johns and I ripped old white sheets into wide strips and we wrapped them around our arms/legs/bodies. Old pillow cases with eye cut outs and a bit more of the wrapping for our heads. We were mummies.

Go as the “Incredibles.” Get thee some red Dickies coveralls. Cut out some Insigniae out of black felt or construction paper. Paint on masks out of grease paint and Voila! Was it Jack & Helen in the motion picture?

Invest in some hickory stripe bib overalls and matching caps and go as railroad engineers (my son and I did this for his second Halloween; I carried a crossing sign, clipped red flashing bike lights on the back yokes–like the end-of-train signals).

as the “one” dot ;).

What about Salt and Pepper - one of you in white sweats or pants & long sleeve shirt, the other black - silver tams or silver/grey stocking cap with “dots” put on them as the holes in the tops of the shakers. Put an S on the white costume and a P on the black one. Or use a metal colander as a hat as the top of the shaker. Go to the Dollar store and see if you can find two cheap.

I was going to suggest the “famous couples” route–and I definitely support the Johnny & June Carter Cash idea. Go for it! I’m sure it will be super cute!
 
go as the Blues Brothers, you should have the clothes in the closet, or at most need a trip to Salvation Army store, get some shades at the dollar store
