Not to be the bad guy but I have to agree with the church goers about the dogs. I LOVE dogs and I have a big dog but I have no patience for “untrained” dogs. You say your Rot is a trained guard dog. Well, that in itself is a HUGE liability. Typical guard dog training teaches the dog to protect the house at any cost. Training a dog to be a “guard” dog (if it was professionally trained), especially a Rot, is like leaving a loaded gun lying on the table. And training them to be a “guard” dog is not necessary. Any dog who is loved and well taken care of will protect their pack (aka family). It’s in their nature to do so.
Yes I understand…Been an owner of dogs for many years…Never had any problems, I know never say never and there is always a first time for everything…and maybe this is that first time. And this is my first generation of rotts but my db’s 5th generation… His family has been breeding and training Rotts since his great grandfather, and he has helped me so much with both dogs… He is affiliated with a dog police trainer and they both used to work to train rotts, dobies, and shepherds…Right now he’s helping me train the puppy we are holding for a family that wants him…
And about the barking: believe it or not, the barking CAN be controlled. You can teach your dog to be quiet on command. You can also teach them to bark on command. It takes work and consistancy but it can be done.
I definitely understand, but please let me add that even though my dogs bark like I said they have never barked longer than several minutes, it’s not that they bark all day long, they bark at strangers, and it’s usually to warn us and them that they are around…not to be annoyingly barking for hours…that I do not tolerate, I have owned dogs since I could remember, since my parents owned them, and we have never had dogs that barked, otherwise I would never have a dog!!! My sister has a dog, he’s a miniature poodle and you can not be in the same room as that dog…it’s a nonstop barking that has gone on past 30 mintes on a daily basis… Now that my mom has the dog he’s starting to be trained properly and has toned it down, but he’s a work in progress…
That being said, if I saw a big Rott sitting on a porch with no fencing barking threatenly at me I would be scared too. I love dogs, especially big dogs but not mean dogs and from your description of the situation, your dog comes across as a mean to the church folks. How can they trust the dog won’t come after them? The dog might be tied up but just seeing a dog like that barking that much and not being in a fence is pretty scary. You dog might be nice but they don’t know that and seeing the attitude of the dog there is no way they would know it’s a nice dog.
Yes and I am sorry but that kind of is the point, before we had breakins in the ghetto and it was no fun… the cops were at my house so much because I was terrified and thank GOD since I got my rott I haven’t had the need to call them…And the fact that I moved to a better area helps too, and I have moved her from the front porch to the back of the house…as they have told me to do, but that’s still not good enough…
I always take my dogs through formal obedience training and I even show in obedience and my dogs have some titles. I don’t send them off to be trained, I do the training. (I an NOT a professional trainer, I just like to do this). I think this is very important to have control over your dog.
My point is that I totally side with the church goers about your dogs. You really need to get their barking under control so they aren’t so threatening. And you need to make sure your insurance is paid in full in case one of your dogs decides to bite. You say they are sweet and would never hurt anyone but dogs are still animals and they can do something unexpectedly. Also, you said yourself that this Rott is trained to be a guard dog. I am not sure if you realize it but dogs tend to react to how their owners are feeling. So, since you dont’ like these chruch people, if the dog happens to react to your feelings at the wrong time, the “guard” dog part of him might come out and he will act accordingly if he feels you are threatened.
I am sorry but I never said I didn’t like the church people, I stated that I didn’t know why they were the way they were with me but I never said I didn’t like them… I didn’t choose not to be able to really speak with them or communicate with them, they chose that for themselves… Perhaps my b started it by being a little too honest and “rude” with the Pastor telling him what he did, but we have never said anything to them at all that would cause problems…AND like I said it just started recently… I think they were expecting us to move since my lease is up every 6 months, I guess maybe that’s what they were waiting for and it’s been almost 2 years…

And yes she will attack if someone comes near the house with a threatening attitude, but only when the person attacks first…that’s what she was trained to do…So she knows to study the situation and then she enforces herself… Thanks for the insurance advise, I do keep up with it all the time!!!
I just want to warn you, be very careful about how your dogs act towards these people or any people for that matter.
