Why??.

I am an Evangelical Christian. I was raised a catholic in New York in the 70s.{now I am in Texas.} I am very happy with my church I attend every Sunday and Wed. night. Lately I have been feeling this pull toward the Catholic Church. I can’t shake it. I have visited the local catholic church and even cried when I coulden’t make it to midnight mass last night. Why should I come back ? why shoulden’t I ? I don’t know what is going on…GO SPURS :confused:
 
All who are Baptized are Baptized into Christ, into His Mystical Body which subsists in the Catholic Church. The Holy Spirit which comes to dwell in the person at Baptism constantly calls the person to fuller and closer union with Christ. The closest union with Christ is in the celebration of the Sacraments, specifically the Eucharist. When receiving a valid Eucharist, you receive in Holy Communion the Body, Blood , Soul, and Divinity of Christ. A closer Communion with Christ cannot be had in this life!
 
What do you consider the “fullness of the Gospel” Untill lately I have felt nothing lacking and I still profess an un-yielding Faith in our Lord.
 
By “fullness” I mean the complete teachings, including the sacraments. A Sacrament is a visible sign, instituted by Christ, that confers the grace that the sacrament represents. Baptism is more than a sign of faith using water; it actually regenerates the soul and you are born into a life of grace. Confession is more than ‘getting it off your chest’; your sins are actually absolved by Christ through His representative (the priest) and grace is given. Communion is more than a communal meal taken with others your faith community; it is the physical Body and Blood of Christ, given by Him to nourish the Church.
“The church” is more than a general community of believers who have faith in Christ. It is the Bride of Christ, a visible “light on the hill”, a real and true institution created by Jesus and kept safe by the Holy Spirit.
It’s like reading the Reader’s Digest version of Shakespeare- it’s good but doesn’t compare to the real thing. T
 
You can never have too much of Jesus. Jesus simply wants to share more of Himself and His gifts with you.

You have all of the apostle’s written instructions in the Bible; Jesus wants you to also have all of the apostle’s oral instructions as well, instructions preserved in the Apostolic Traditions of Catholic Church. (2 Thessalonians 2:15)

Jesus doesn’t want you to struggle on your own trying to discern which teachings to believe in and which to reject; Jesus wants you to have his gift of authoritative pastors and teachers found in the bishops of his Catholic Church. (Ephesians 4:11)

You have prayer partners in the Christians you know on earth; Jesus wants you to know about the army of eager prayer partners you have in the cloud of Christian witnesses already in heaven who surround you. (Hebrews 12:1, 22-24)

Pattio- not unlike you, I too was an Evangelical Christian. A Catholic bashing Evangelical at that. In my early 30’s I found myself drawn to the Catholic Church, prompted by God of course. Boy did I fight back…I looked for every out I could find…but there were none when I looked honestly at the evidence.

The kicker for me? I finally decided to attend a Mass and get it out of my system, you know expecting to feel revulsion or something. I cried instead. And that began my journey home.

Don’t ignore your inclinations and desires, it is the ‘still small voice’ and He’s calling you!

Pattio, the Holy Spirit is calling you home. While you may feel consciously that your current church enables you to worship God and feel community with His people, if you were in the Catholic church you would be receiving the sacraments, which are the means by which God opens you up to receiving SOOOOOOOOOOOO much more of His grace. Many Evangelicals are great people who love the Lord very much, but by saying you don’t “need” the sacraments, you are keeping Him at arms’ length. Please don’t ignore His gentle entreaties to draw you nearer.

It sounds like the Holy Spirit is acting in your life. Your heart is burning just like all those on the road to Emaus. You are hearing and recognizing the voice of the Lord and I think you know where he is calling you from.

A better question is: What is stopping you from being Catholic?

If your heart is burning and you haven’t acted then there must be something that you are holding on to that is holding you back.
 
The Holy Spirit led me home to the Catholic Curch and out of my old Baptist sect back in spring 2003. The Holy Spirit took the scales off my eys in the fall of 2002 and my search for the true Church Christ founded ended in the LAST place I looked or even expected to find it, the Catholic Church. When the Holy Spirit worked within me to take the scales off my eyes I realized everthing I read in Scripture was found in the Catholic Church. My old Baptist sect violated Scripture though the people truly loved God. Loving God is not the same as believing in Him by following Him and ebeying Him. Believin IS NOT a one time event. It is an ongoing process of loyalty and Faith. Just read the entire Bible in context to find out what to believe. Don’t memorize verses out of context to justify what Protestants tell you to believe. The Bible was written in books - not verses.

Too bad, so many Catholics are ignorent of their Faith and have no idea what a gift they have.

I tried to stop my journey to the Catholic Church by becoming Methodist or Episcopol. I even contemplated going to an Episcopol seminary! They seemed like pretty good sects with lots-a-truth, but to be loyal to God I continued my path to His visible body on earth, His Catholic Church. No matter how much truth the Protestant sects have in them in various amounts based on the sect, only His Catholic Church has the fullness of Him.

I did not want to be Catholic. My wife almost left me over it, she still might.😉 I tried to find any denomination to find a home in as long as it was anything but Catholic. But when I read the Bible. When I decided I would be loyal to Jesus no matter what. I crossed the Tiber in tears. You could say I was dragged across the Tiber kicking and screaming by the truth! I will never desert Christ again now that I am a member of His Catholic Church!

PS, Most Baptists and other Protestants I know love God greatly. They just have no desire to study history nor delve into deep theology. They like the one line verses (out of context) that support thier opinions - whatever the opinion of theology is that day that is.😦

The Catholic Church is like a massive pyramid on Faith. Strong, sturdy and built on past knowledge. The Protestant theology is like a long wall of stones placed end to end but only one stone high. Each time a Protestant puts another stone on top of another to construct something (theology) another Protestant just comes along and kicks the stones over so that the wall must be started all over again (Reformation).
 
Rather than “ditto” everything everyone else has said, I have another reason – the Catholic Church is a Mission Field and in addition to coming Home to receive the Sacraments, He could be calling you Home to work from within the Church to save souls.

We need you! Come Home!

The biggest worries I had in coming back to the Catholic Church is was it wrong and would I then be missing something?

Why should you come to the Catholic Church?

I will give you my answer to that question for myself, you will be happier than you ever have been when you finally realize what you have come back to. You might fight it and not be happy as you fight it, you might doubt, but seek and you will find your answers. It was the best decision I ever made, and if you don’t check into it honestly then you will never know if it is really what it is.

Will you miss anything?

I do not miss a thing, if I like singing it is there, if I like intense Bible study it is there, if like contemplative prayer, group prayer, praise and worship, it is there. What is also there are full concrete answers with back up.

Many of us have come back to the Church on this board and we will be happy to answer any questions you have.
