Since so many of our Muslim friends came here from their website, whyislam.org, I was curious how many Catholic Answers members have visited their forum site.

I have seen a couple of us posting there but I wonder if anyone else visited.

You should at least stop in. It is interesting.

It’s a difficult forum to post in. Some of the ‘regulars’ take offense readily. But there are also some very good people there.

I hate it when the whyislam people get offended. If any of you posts there I would be so happy and be so ready to answer any questions (admittedly somewhat unlike what I do on here)

I actually post there much more than I have ever here. I don’t know why, but maybe it is because it is more intimate(lack of better word) than the huge catholic answers forum. There are less people in the whyislam forum. But the topics, of course, are only related to inter-religious dialogue.
I have found a few tough people in their aproach in understanding and responding, but I have found some very great people there…for those people I stay and am glad to keep posting there.

Peace,
Luigi

just visited the website. Browsed a few threads in the inter-religous dialougue. Some look like a slug fest. Don’t know whether there could be really meaningful dialogue take place.

FYI This is the same view of some muslim brothers and sisters of the catholic forum…

Yeah. guess it depend on people to make things happen - positvely or otherwise. Good dialogue is always beneficial for both sides, but I suppose we could learn too from whatever encounter we have with people of different faiths.

Peace.

I think the offense comes when people missionize instead of asking to learn. Thats where I get bent. I can have a goot dialogue and still maintain the “agree to disagree” but when people have alterior motives… i find that disingenuous and dishonest.

I’ve been going there to get a better understanding of Islam, probably post more than I do here, where I mostly just read. I’ve saved for later reading several promising looking documents by Muslim writers on human nature in general, but obviously with a religious bent. Read some really pleasant stuff.
To some degree I would say I have been reassured by the things I’ve read. For example, there is only one fatwa that I could find that expressly states all of us infidels should be killed. That by our old friend, Osama Bin Laden. While some radical clerics spout hate, there are definitely in the minority.
However, I would say there is a higher proportion of hotheads over there. I go to some political discussion boards where there are a lot of inflexible, intolerant idealogues – both left and right – but they don’t hold a candle to these guys.
On the other hand, I’m very comfortable posting there. I think I can hold my own in an exchange of views. On those political boards, I would be cut to ribbons. Most whyislam posters are, how shall I say, come across as a bit unsophisticated. In some respects. In general. (It’s funny; they think we are not very worldly, and I think it is they that has the narrow perspective.)

I’m attempting to understand the Muslim mindset. It is different than ours (and there’s nothing wrong with that). And not in the way I may have anticipated. Their faith is simple. Ours is probably more complex. They think with their brain when it comes to faith; we follow our heart. There tends to be more black and white, right or wrong, based on what I’ve read. There are more subtleties with us.
At least that’s what I’ve gathered at this early stage.

LtTony,

Very interesting observations. Hot heads? Who you calling a hothead? ROFL 😃

Peace

I have bookmarked the site for a good reference tool.

I am here to learn, listen & understand.

May God open our hearts & minds to the truth.

Can anyone recommend a good Arab discussion board? A mid-east board? Or maybe a multi-cultural board?

I’m interested in other (world) viewpoints on the war against terrorism. whyislam.org has some characteristics about it at times that don’t appeal to me.

Thanks,
Jim

I don’t know any sorry. However I am sure if you search for chatrooms you can find something. Perhaps your looking for a board though and not a chatroom. I will let you know if I run into any. 🙂

Yes, I believe that most of them are young (under 25?) and perhaps fallen-away western Christians, for the most part. So, I overlook any rash or emotional postings for that reason.

It is sad as I’m thinking most did not understand fully, Christian beliefs, or had a poor instructor, if one at all. This is a big problem within Catholicism. However, they seem to be a group still searching for truth and can use some understanding answers to their questions.

May we be found worthy of the promises of Christ…
