I am a widow of 6 months, my husband passed away 6 months ago. I am trying to pick up the pieces. He did receive the last rights two times before he passed. He was a Catholic by choice before we got married. I am concerned about his soul. I pray for him every night and think about him most of the time. Anyone else with the same problem.

I can tell that you loved your husband very much. It shows such love and concern, as well as deep faith, that you pray for him every day. I am a newer Catholic convert (Easter 2010), as is my husband. He and I have been married 15 years last fall. Your witness to love and faith is beautiful. I hope that one day, if and when I find myself widowed, that I will be as loving and faithful as you are.
I am so sorry for your loss.

thank you, we would have been married 53 years a few days after he passed. He was a convert also as I grew up in the faith and attended catholic school. When we were married, the church did not normally allow a non catholic and catholic to marry in church and we wanted that so he converted. We did have a good marriage but now that I am entirely alone, I worry about such things that I have no control over. However, he did have the last rights and I believe that he was saved by his faith.

By last rites do you mean anointing of the sick?

The anointing of the sick forgives all sins too.

If by last rites you mean communion and prayers for the dying then I would believe that your husband intended to die as a Catholic in communion with the Church.

In both cases have faith and hope that your husband’s sins have been forgiven.

Finally, as much as you love and miss your husband so Our Lord loved and longed for him too. Trust in God’s mercy which far exceeds our own.

I am sorry to hear of your loss.

Have you talked to a priest? A priest might be able to reassure you.

Does your church have social groups for seniors, where you might be able to make friends?

My mom is over 70 and lost my father nearly 30 years ago and does the same. I wouldn’t consider it a “problem”. My wife’s father recently died, she asked me if she thought they were both in purgatory right now, I told her we could only hope and pray.

This is such beautiful encouragement. It is so hard to understand or remember the depths of God’s love for us. Reminders such as yours for the OP are so important. As a relatively new Catholic, I can only hope that one day, my awareness of God’s love will become internalized, so that I can trust Him as well as do the faithful Catholics I have encountered that give such a great witness for God’s love.

You are doing the right thing in praying for him. You could also have a Mass said for him, and have that done on a regular basis, such as once a month or 4 times a year, or on the anniversary of his death.

Here’s a touching article on Mass intentions by Ellen Rossini of the National Catholic Register.

Yes he received the anointment of the sick, our pastor visited him in the hospital twice and another priest also gave him the same. He did not receive communion the last time as he was not aware that we were there. I thank you for all your concern, I am not depressed and do have friends in my community, some of which are also widows. I attend mass regularly unless the weather is bad. I also received at the funeral mass cards for masses said for him for a year. I pray for him all of the time. We just didn’t get to say good bye as he was sick but we didn’t realize that it was the end of his days. I am adjusting.

:hug1: I know it can be hard, especially after so many years together. If necessary, get someone to stay with you a few days. I mean, actually stay with you. Do you have any kids? Maybe one of them can be with you. It might help with the loneliness. Having someone to say good-night to and all of that. Know that he is well and loved.

All his sins were forgiven - twice 😉

Sending you a “cyber-hug”…I’m so sorry for your loss. You sound like a strong and loving person, with great faith.
