Not sure what to think. My wife is a high school teacher at the local public high school, she is popular with the students, but still strict with her students.

A student wants to start up a Gay-Lesbian-Straight club at the school. All clubs need a teacher sponsor who oversees the activities of the club to make sure they stay within the guidelines of school conduct.

I think the club is being set up to focus on “tolerance” which I believe is something that our social justice teachings would agree with. I do not think it is being set up to promote the G-L agenda, but I’m sure it could steer that way.

Thoughts? She has not committed.

I would decline. This is going to be a sticky position and your wife does not want to be accused of being homophobic when she does not advocate the gay lifestyle.

If it was ME? I would very gently say no to that student.

Yeah, it sounds like the intentions are good but you’re right, what could it turn into?

What do the other teachers think about this?

A gay lesbian straight club is going to go much farther than teaching tolerance. It is going to strive to present homosexual behavior as acceptable. Given that how could a Catholic possibly sponsor such a group?

I should mention that my wife is Episcipalian but attends Catholic church and we raise our daughter strictly Catholic.

That said, even our Priest was surprised to learn she was not Catholic one night when we all went out to dinner (this was after he had been to our house many times and had been out to dinner with us many times prior).

As for our Church teachings, it is my understanding that we do not embrace the lifestyle, but we can still embrace the individuals.

There is no way that this club is not going to be promoting homosexuality. Whether your wife realizes it or not if she sponsors this club she is sending the message that she supports homosexual behavior. If you or her are comfortable with that then she should do it. But don’t try to convince yourself that this is just an act of tolerance and has nothing to do with acceptability of homosexuality.

That is exactly what I am afraid of. It is one thing to accept people for who they are, it is another to promote that lifestyle.

Well, although I agree, we cannot embrace the lifestyle of homosexuality and we must love the individuals (hate the sin, love the sinner), it does not mean we should support a club that embraces the lifestyle… Have you ever heard of an anti-homosexuality Gay-Lesbian-Straight club?

👍

Also, loving someone doesn’t mean we have to be ok with the choices that they make if they are immoral choices. We should do whatever we can, with prudence (anything from just prayer to actual actions/talking with the person) to help them out.

If it is set up to focus on “tolerance”, how about a Tolerance Club. That way they could focus on tolerating everything that might not be mainstream so kids don’t feel ridiculed. In introducing just a GLS club I think it would turn into an acceptance of that particular behavior club.

I would most definitely decline, if I were her. My husband, who’s a high school teacher, is at a school that has a well-established gay-lesbian-straight club. They talk about “tolerance” all the time, but what they really are doing is pushing their own agenda of special treatment for gay and lesbians only among many other disturbing things.

Alarm bells should be going off in your head. Estes Bob has it right. Tell your wife to have nothing to do with this “tolerant” club. It would be more reasonable to call it the “Anything Goes and Proud of It Club.”

Okay, as a ex-practicing homosexual and future Catholic devoted to Chastity…

Decline!

Promoting it is just as bad as condoning the idea of having a specific club for GLBTs… If it were somewhat of a tolerance group and not just devoted to GLBTs then maybe talk to the parish priest about it…

As for the end of this matter… in the words of Suze Orman…

You have been DENIED!

By embracing the individuals I would see it as appropriate to allow these children to participate in a soccer club or other activity despite the inappropriate desires they are dealing with. To sponsor this organization would be to advocate for the lifestyle. Since when is tollerance of sin a good thing?

As a high school guidance counselor in a public school I was asked to do the same thing. I was happy to support these youth in this way. They simply need a place to gather and receive support from peers and adults. If your wife sponsors this club she may be able to provide some positive guidance to some of these teens. Most times, these teens are shunned by peers and adults. Research shows that without support they often turn to suicide!! They need positive adult influences in their lives. Supporting them doesn’t mean you condone their lifestyle. Many Catholic churches have support groups for Gay/Lesbian members. As long as this club is handled maturly and in a respectful manner there is not anything “anti-Catholic” about it.

Jesus welcomed the social outcasts to his table to guide them and teach them…something to consider regardless of your wife’s religion.🙂

You are incorrect regarding the nature and purpose of such an organization.

A Catholic **cannot **be a sponsor of such an organization. She needs to decline.

There are a number of things left out of the original post. While you should discourage it if you can, where does your wife stand? Is the gay agenda perfectly all-right with her? Furthermore, if she has no religious grounds for staying away from such a group, perhaps you could use secular grounds. The high rates of divorce, children growing up without fathers, impoverished women after divorce, and many other things show the effect of the breakdown of family relationships. To support the gay agenda is to support another serious blow against the family, when it has been weakened greatly already. If she will not hear such things, though, there might be little you can do to stop here, unless for all I know, if would be a permanent ground for dissention in your own marriage.
The least you should do is to pray about this situation.

The absolutely mind-boggling aspect of this all is why (precisely) a school of any sort should need a sexually oriented club to begin with?

God Bless you that took great courage…May Holy Mother Church keep you always in her embrace…I have often head Fr Groshel talk about what fine and holy people Gays and Trans are…there is an organization within the church for them called Courage…it might be something you would like to check out to find people that can help you in your walk with God

That’s kind of my thought. Is there also going to be a pre-marital sex club and a drug-users club? How about a club for bullies?
