Wife converted to wordoffaith movement

My concern is whether our marriage is valid because my wife is no longer catholic. I am struggling and praying that my wife returns to the catholic church. we have been married 20 years and we have a decent marriage. I would prefer going to church with my wife but I am glad that she has a good faith with Jesus and God as her savior.
It is very difficult when you dont share the same faith. She discourages me from even making the sign of the cross and she has removed all my statues. I can live with it though because I make enough of my own mistakes.
my question is the validity of our marriage. Doesn’t she have to remain catholic for our marriage to be a sacrament?
I’m new at this so forgive any innappropriate posting mistakes.
I appreciate the kind words I have read from the posters here.

Hi scott,

All sacraments, if they were valid once, remain valid. There is no way to retroactively invalidate a valid sacrament. So, if you received the Sacrament of matrimony 20 years ago, then you received it – no matter what happens after you received it.

Validity of marriage deals with things before marriage, not after. Your marriage is sacramental.

Why did you let her remove YOUR statues, though? It’s not a question of religion but of personal property. I know our faith is not in these statues (idolatry), but at the same time, I was given a few crucifixes, statues of the Blessed Mother, and of St. Joan of Arc (my patron saint) when I was baptized and confirmed (I’m a convert). I’d be very angry if someone got rid of them, because they were gifts.

Even though you’re upset that she left the Faith, you still respect that she has faith. Does she reciprocate that respect? If so, why does she get upset when you cross yourself in prayer?

You need to be a great Catholic. If you do not know your Faith well, start learning.

Surround yourself with good solid teaching. Go to your Parish Bible studies. Study and read the Scriputres (The Great Adventure and Ignatius have good Bible studies).

Do you have Catholic radio in your city? If not, you can listen online at www.ewtn.com or www.avemariaradio.net. Sirius Satellite Radio has two Catholic program stations. Invest in some CDs or videos - Fr. Corapi has some GREAT series.

Why? Your wife is in a very dangerous place. The “Word of Faith” teaches a proesperity goespel that is harmful to the soul. It distorts God into Santa Clause with a slot machine. “If you have enough faith and CLAIM it, God will give you the big house, fancy car, diamonds, make you skinny and healthy and rich”.

The flip side, if you lose your job, if you get sick, you are told you do not have enough faith. This horrible distortion of the Gospel leads to despair. As we know, we ALL suffer. God allows our suffering to be for a reason - it has redempitve value!!

The WoF bunch tosses that aside for a gimmie gimmie Jesus attitude. When things go wrong, and one does not know how to embrace the Cross of suffering, one can be tempted to reject God and fall into despair.

Be there, let your wife see a strong Man of Faith. Someone who knows Jesus and His Church, someone who can guide her back when this false place lets her down.
 
What kage_ar said.👍 And set yourself up a home altar, WITH your statues, Catholic Bible, etc.
 
This will sound really naive, but what is word of faith? But anyway, I would talk to your priest maybe about what to do? In the meantime, pray hard for your wife. Maybe she is going through something that would make her leave her Catholic faith behind her? Anyway, I will be praying for both of you.

No it doesn’t, because it’s just something that might not come up. Another name for it is “Name It and Claim It”.

Thank you so much for your replies. You are right I need to be the best Roman Catholic Christian I can be. and on that note there are many areas I fail in. I do attend church and try to keep close to the faith by occasional catechism reads. I love the church and all she teaches. sometimes i get it wrong though.
Word of Faith is dangerous I agree. Here is an actual example. My wife bought a new car against my better judgement because God will provide. Not because we can afford it. What scares me most is that she claims to hear God directly.
The thing is she is right about God taking care of us and protecting us. Also I am nervous about judging fellow christians. Yes Word of Faith is hideous, but we can not judge these people because they are fellow christians. I appreciate your prayers most of all. Every week I light a candle for my wife to convert back to catholicism. Her biggest turn off was the lack of energy in the people in the church. To me when I read the catechism or goto church or hear the readings daily, I just know its true like breathing air. I’m a cradle catholic though. I am challenged to accept other faiths especially other christians they are our brothers in Christ.

Scott, something esle occured to me. The Word of Faith bunch has such a prosperity thing going- Maybe Dave Ramsey can be of some help. She can’t say his books are Catholic like Phil Lenehan’s books that say almost the same thing. Financial Peace Revisited and Total Money Makeover both have a little section on Name-It-And-Claim-It practices, and Dave mentions it on his shows once in a while.
