Wife is pregnant, baby name thoughts?

Your husband is right. I would also avoid anything ending in “y” or “ie” for a boy. It usually sounds whiny or feminine.

Thank you for all the great responses. My wife really likes Beatrix. We’re looking for a classic Saints name. Any suggestions are appreciated. My wife likes Sebastian for a boys name, but she is worried there is no nickname. Last time if we had a boy instead of a girl we were going to use the name Xavier Paul.

What about a simple, short middle name like John , Mark or Luke?

Your husband is right. Names ending in “y” or “ie” for a boy usually sound too feminine. Case in point, Emily is the female version of Emil.

I agree. I don’t like boys’ names that end in y or -ie but Sebbie(Sebby) is a nickname for a little boy like Joey is for Joe. Seb is very masculine!!

Why do people have to have a nickname? Especially when parents take such pains to find a good name? I think it’s rude to shorten a name. Unless a person says, Hi, I’m James…but I prefer to go by Jim, or something like that.

Well I guess everyone has their opinion. My name is Sarah, and I always wanted a nickname. I like the versatility of sort of changing it based on the situation - more formal or less formal. So all my kids have nicknames that they are generally referred by unless it is a more formal situation when they are called their full name.

However, with that being said I would never refer to someone as Jim if he introduced himself as James. You’re right - that is rude. It is up to the individual to decide how they want to be referred to, and I think it’s nice to have a different variation.

And maybe Seb has to grow on you a bit before you like it? I was really unsure about Sebastian when he was born. We actually almost changed it to Xavier on the second day before we had filled out the birth papers. However, he is now 2 and it has become one of my favorite names. He is called Sebastian a lot, but goes by Seb most of the time. He is also affectionately called Sebbie by close family.

Lovely story! Thanks for sharing that. I love the name Sebastian. As I said, it’s by FAR the most frequently chosen name by our Confirmation candidates. In fact, after the 6th boy was before the Bishop, the Bishop said “You realize of course, that he was tied to a tree and shot with arrows? Are you SURE?” The whole congregation got a good laugh out of it. But the young men love it!
