Maybe counseling would be a good idea. I might try to get her to reply on here too, as hearing my side of it without hers maybe a little lopsided for you all. I can probably get her on here tomorrow for a little amateur counseling and see how it goes. I appreciate you all and have some fresh food for thought. It helps just to talk about it, I feel like I can’t talk about it with close friends or family because it’d drive a wedge between her and them. My wife is a good solid woman and I hope she gets on here tomorrow and you all come back and read it…
If your wife does read this thread, my advice to her would be to seek the advice of a priest, or a Catholic spiritual advisor, or a Catholic therapist, regarding her feelings for this other man and her participation in a band with him. (Or maybe she has sought such advice already.) It seems to me that it could be beneficial to receive advice from a person who is wise and who is unentangled with the situation.

I just wanted to add that I agree with the advice for your wife to leave the band and have as little contact with the other guy as possible. I just didn’t say it earlier because you seemed to have made up your mind it wasn’t possible. But seeing him really is just going to keep fanning the fire.

Yes. The OP should really talk to his wife too, share his fears and doubts with her. All of us giving advice won’t help much without communication.

Greetings! This is the Wife here, the topic of this hot conversation! Sheesh, I feel like I’m walking into a pack of hungry wolves.

I love God, my husband, and my kids. I am glad my husband sought an outlet to talk to someone else besides me about this since that is what he needed. This Other we are talking about was family to me when I didn’t have any one else (as a kid… pre-romance days). I don’t feel the need to detail the entire story, but I see now that I dated my dear husband at first as a rebound. He knows that, we’ve talked about that. Bummer that I still feel sadness at the loss of this other friend and have trouble shaking the feeling of being “his girl”. [Your que: Attack!] His family and extended family watched out for me when my own was in peril and I was a teenager roaming around and living in my car! Cheating in any way what so ever (emotionaly, physical) not only would mean I was cheating on my husband and family and GOD, but also practically all of my friends who are also this guys’s family or mutual friends. Not only that, but my band that I love and feel quite fulfilled by. There is no chance in the world that he or I would risk hurting in any small way any of those people. His kids and our kids have been best friends since birth. His wife is one of my dearest friends also.

I do know we are all human and that it must truly appear to be the “near occasion of sin”,
but you must remember that these other people in the group are also dear friends of mine and the Other as well as both our spouses…so while it sounds risky to say that I am going out spending weekends on the road with this other guy, remember that we are packed in a bus with perfectly good middle men who we risk destroying friendships with if we did anything at all in appropriate. One of the girls in the group has asked his wife to be her maid of honor! So we’re not alone, even though our spouses are not always there gigging with us.

I feel conflicted because in honesty, I wish I loved all my friends the way I do this one. I wish him the best in everything - including his marriage - I want him to succeed and never be apart from God and in the end go straight to Heaven. I wouldn’t put him in a risky situation for his sake as well as my own and for the love of my husband, who loves me and I know it well. So many of you have suggested getting him out of my life altogether, but I don’t see the point in throwing out a slew of friendships because of a slew of unfortunate emotions that for eight years and running have not caused any tangible sins. And for the record, any thought of him comes to mind I immediately boot it and confess it as soon as I can. My husband knows this and also believes it to not be the best option to distance ourselves.

So yea, sucky situation huh?! Cheating and annulments and divorces and whatever else have been made mention of are not options or possibilities. I guess I don’t know what I want any of you to say but perhaps advice that does not assume to know the whole picture would be a little more helpful. We’ve read through the ones that make hard set declarations of how things should proceed and neither of us feel they make sense in real life. But any more advice should take into consideration that I am actually not at all going through this without thought or concern for my husband and family, and I pray every day that we can see what to do now. Also that I was a raging ***** who suffered from acute boredom and frustration at doing nothing but wiping butts and cleaning dishes before I was hired to play music with the tightest group around- excuse the french!

No, an annullment has nothing to do with who one is in love with.
It possibly can if withheld, under c. 1098, and an obsession could qualify for c. 1095(1) or (2) in extreme cases. Just saying, not suggesting or encouraging anything. This only has to do with nullity decrees, I’m not referring it to the discussion we’re having here.

Hi, um, wife! 🙂

I’m just interested in this final comment of yours. I’m a father with five kids and a demanding job. There is something that I do in my life that makes me feel vibrant and alive, makes me dream and fills me with excitement. It also has come awfully close to destroying my marriage and family. I have had to reject it mercilessly, even though it very often appears good and beautiful to me.

When I made a vow to my wife that I would love and honor her, I was making a vow that I would reject anything that stood in the way of her knowing my love. I would reject anything, even if I saw that thing as my means to my happiness and personal fulfillment. This is, as I understand it, the sacramental meaning of marriage.

Do you agree that this is the marital vow? I’m just trying to make sure we’re on the same page here, theologically.

The question should not be what is best for the husband or what is best for the wife. The question should be what is best for the kids?

I can empathize with your situation. I was the girlfriend of a musician who still had strong feelings for a member of his band. I agree with you both that at this point, ending the relationship with the band would be more detrimental to everyone’s emotional health.

I want to reiterate the suggestion to go to counseling. A therapist can give you tools to help you work through the emotions and help you prioritize the love the wife has for two men. It takes concerted actions to help grow the love between husband and wife so that, after some time, the actions reflect the stronger emotions between the couple. And ideally, the love for the other takes a back seat.

Best of luck!

Thank you for sharing. I think you should just sit down with your husband and talk. .Go for counselling together, that might help. I see it as insecurity on your husband’s part although you married him. I really do not see how people on an anonymous forum can do anything but give basic advice.

God bless you, your husband and children.

Greetings, Mrs. hlewis. I just want to say that, speaking for myself at least, I was trying to give the best advice I could based on the information in your husband’s posts. But of course, no message board post is ever going to be able to convey fully and accurately all of the information and nuances about a personal marital situation like this, so some of my advice might be completely off base. If my advice or anyone else’s advice seems inapplicable to your situation, please feel free to ignore it.

After reading your post, I would recommend that you and your husband seek advice from a priest, a therapist, or a spiritual advisor about your situation. I think you will probably get better advice that way than the advice that I or anyone else can give you here.

Greetings Wife.

I think, with due respect, that you are missing the point. You say you’ve avoided sin, but this is not the only concern you have here. Your husband is suffering because of your feelings and I really don’t read much in your post that suggests it’s a great concern to you, compared to other issues. You’ seem more concerned with respecting your other friendships and following your music dreams than making sure your family life is a priority.

It seems that you spend so much time with this band that your family misses you. You feel “fulfilled” while they (your husband at least) feel neglected. Your husband does not know how to deal with this, but what suggestions do you have?

As others have posted, a consellor and/or priest may be needed to help you two work through these issues.

Dear wife,

I read your answer, and I am puzzled as to why do you think the best solution is to do nothing? 🤷

Didn’t you read what your husband says?, and how it does affect your marriage, and your family? Don’t your prefer to find a solution that doesn’t put your marriage and family in jeopardy?

Also like other posters, I cannot help and wonder why do you want to stay specifically playing in this band? Why don’t you find another band to join? Even if this band is the “best” in the region, it doesn’t mean that there are not other alternatives.

I also want to remind you that thinking is an action, and that impure thoughts are mortal sins, as well as any thoughts you may have on belonging to this man is also mortal sin (i.e. “Thou shall not covet thy neighbor’s husband”).

Let me also bring up that when you say the act of contrition, remember you say: “I firmly resolve with the help of Thy Grace to confess my sins, do penance, and amend my life. Amen”.

You say you confess your sins, and you probably doing your penance as the priest indicates, but how are you amending your life with regards to this situation? It doesn’t seem like “do nothing” is amending your life.

I pray that you open your eyes and realize that continuing this course of action is not healthy at all, even for you, and your heart… feeding feelings of unrequited love.

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; And do you, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the divine power, thrust into hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

The only person who matters in this equation is the one that’s being hurt by it. Playing music in a band with a former, or unrequited lover is just plain playing with fire (that’s hellfire, btw).

I think it’s odd that the Mrs OP keeps a diary she leaves for her H to read. Why would you write about your “love” for this other man and then want your H to read that? It sounds passive aggressive and plain cruel.

I am not moved by statements of either party that this is a known thing and something understood and accepted by both.

Even though the H agreed to marry under these conditions, I doubt very much that he thought his W would continue on with these pinings for the old flame. He likely thought (maybe naively) that his love would satisfy her and banish all thoughts of this man from her mind.

The marriage is the #1 thing here. Not the band, the music and definitely not this “friendship.” There’s never a time when temptation might not hit and the two become embroiled in an affair…and then claim “It just happened! We didn’t mean for it to happen!”

Just imagine the W who is still THINKING about this man, still has feelings of admiration, respect and physical attraction for this man, putting herself in his company time and time again … sharing smiles, pats on the back, laughter and conversation … all the while the sparks are lying low in the embers … he gives her the slightest inkling that he’s also interested in moving beyond the chit chat … and … “It just happened!”

That’s basically all you can do about it right there. This family is afflicted somehow. They need prayers and ministering through their parish.

I don’t think there is anything people on an internet forum can convince her of. If she agrees to go to a Catholic marriage counselor, then perhaps the counselor can help her arrive at the proper conclusion.

If she hasn’t already put everything she values in one basket, and this other guy in the other basket, and figured out which basket is more important, then we can’t make her do that.

I think this situation is so sad.

This thread is so bizarre. I usually just read on this forum and don’t respond, but this takes the cake. I am assuming this is legitimate… seems unbelievable, but I will put aside my doubt.

To the Wife:

There is absolutely NOTHING that matters more than your husband, children, and your eternal salvation. Why on earth would you put those three things in jeopardy? And if you say you are not, you are simply lying to yourself.

It all seems very immature to me.

This whole situation is a case of “can’t see the forest for the trees” if I ever heard of one.

Sometimes when you are in the middle of a situation, you don’t realize how toxic the whole thing is. This is the behavior of an addict. Perhaps you are addicted to those feelings of “love” and yearning… longing and never being able to have him. This keeps your husband at arm’s length, since you can never be honestly, truly intimate if you are giving another man space in your head. And in your case, space in your life.

This is not some impossible, unchangeable situation. There is a simple answer here, and if it causes you pain, deal with those feelings and replace them with happiness at seeing your husband’s relief and your children’s stable future.

We are not supposed to mosey around temptation… we are told to FLEE temptation. If you can’t do that for the sake of your sweet children or the pain you are causing your husband (can’t imagine EVER telling my husband I was in love with a former flame, geesh, how agonizing for him!) then do it for the sake of your own soul.

Unfortunately, someone who is truly an addict and/or has an immature definition of “love” probably can’t project toward the very real, ETERNAL consequences of this dangerous game.

To the Husband:

I am sorry for you. Don’t talk yourself out of your rightful feelings of unease, hurt, and distrust. This is a bizarre situation. There is nothing for everyone else to “understand” here. Your wife admittedly loves another man, and leaves her family regularly to spend time with him. She is admittedly looking for an escape from day-to-day mundane tasks of being a wife and mom. Of course you are going to be tortured by that. I just can’t see why any religious grown-up woman would do that to her spouse.

Please talk to your priest. This situation is not normal.

You are both in my prayers.

I agree. This is so, so sad for all parties involved. 😦

To the OP and wife,

You both can come on an anonymous forum and tell us how you feel, surely you can talk to each other and to a counsellor?

OP,
You say you married her knowing she still had feelings for another and you waited a few years and a few kids before coming to an anonymous forum. See a priest, see a counsellor, talk to your wife.

OP’s wife,

If everything is fine, why is your husband coming here to vent?. Talk to him, see a priest, see a counsellor.
