It is a long story but my wife wants to get a Mirena iud placed in the near future. I have been telling her of the negative effects and the damage it will cause especially to her soul. I am at my witts end. Does not this device cause eptopic pregnancy?

IUDs do have a higher risk of ectopic pregnancy, yes.

Why does your wife want to use birth control at all? That would be the place to start.

It’s been a while since I read on the subject, but as I recall an IUD functions by tricking the immune system inside the uterus into believing there is an infection and triggering defensive reactions. The uterus then becomes a hostile environment where a fertilized egg is generally unable to implant and even sperm may succumb to immune attack before they can reach the egg. It’s an open question as to which of those mechanisms is more often responsible for no baby arriving 9 months later, but as I understand it there’s pretty good chance that babies are being created in there and then being killed off prior to implantation.

Folks today are OK with that though. You can’t hear them scream and there are no pictures to have to look at. Eat, drink and be merry, eh? 😦

Besides that, I’m not so convinced that it’s a healthy thing to keep one’s immune system at Defcon 1 for 24/7/365…

IUD’s have a histoy of causing ectopic pregnancies. This is why so many of them have been recalled, including Mirana. Also, remember, the use of contaceptives is against Catholic teachings. Have you looked into NFP classes instead.

Not only they cause ectopic pregnancies and are abortifacients. But there are babies that successfully implant with the IUD and then the baby is born with the IUD imbedded on the skin.

Tell her the truth, gently, that Mirena doesn’t PREVENT pregnancy, but CAUSES miscarriages. Getone from the doc. Look at it, and read the while insert together.

This ^^

I was once, as a Protestant and a Pagan, very pro-birth control. When I was researching a method for myself everything I read about IUD’s turned me off of them.

Other problems with IUD’s are miscarriages, uterine infections at a higher rate than non-IUD users, perforation (tearing) of the uterus and hormonal IUD’s have been known to cause cysts to form.

On a less serious note, the IUD does have to be removed and a new one inserted every 5-10 years depending on type and is expensive by comparison. The IUD must be checked every month after menstruation because uterine cramping can push it out as can the uterine contractions during orgasm and the user must regularly check the string to make sure it is still in place. The string can be felt by sensitive men during intercourse and some men find it annoying.

In short, it’s not exactly safe, seems to be very unreliable, and is not very effective in preventing pregnancy. Allegedly, 2-10 out of every 1000 women who use IUD’s get pregnant.

But don’t present to her what you “read on the Internet,” unless it’s from the product website. Be factual, credible, and compassionate.

Anyone considering the use of an IUD should read the history of the Dalkon Shield and the horrors it caused.

PS: My thoughts and prayers are with you in your attempt to convince your wife that this is a really bad idea. Bless you for sharing your struggle with us. I hope you find the strength to carry on in this forum, and that your wife finds the wisdom, charity, and love to abandon this endeavor with your help.

If you are unable to change her mind with education, I would let her know that you will not have relations with her while that device is in place. I would also discuss the whole situation including the decision not to have relation with my priest.

Thanks all for the advice, really appreciated. Yes I have tried and I started taking her temperatures with NFP (although we only had relations once) but she for some reason lost trust in it and would skip taking temperatures. I want to go to an NFP class but she doesn’t want to go. In our marriage of 8 years we have only had shared the marital embrace maybe 10 times. She is very afraid of getting pregnant because she had kidney stones with both pregnancies and postpartum with one pregnancy. I wish she would just trust NFP or go to the doctor to see if she could conceive again without kidney stones. Even reading the brocher for this mirana it says it can cause all sorts of problems with the child and mother. I would not be able to have relations with her if she gets the mirana if it meant a child could be hurt or she could be hurt. Hopefully she sees the problem with artificial contraception and the mirana before she gets it placed.

I would suggest Pope John Paul II Theology of the Body. It should be able to answer all questions and might help her open her mind to NFP. My husband and I finished up NFP classes a few months back and it explains ALL the medical side of everything. It’s really amazing. I will pray for ya’ll and especially your wife!

Thank you, your prayers are much needed and appreciated. She will not read any books on this at this point. I have “the art of natural family planning” which I am still reading but my wife doesn’t want to read it. Ihave theology of the body, I may read it again but my wife will not at this point. I wish she would take the NFP classes with me… if she doesn’t I may take them on my own.

Wait, OP, did you say that you’ve been intimate about ten times in eight years but you are the one recently taking her temp for charting, and neither of you have had classes?

No wonder she wants an IUD, she’s sold on the false idea of the only control over her body is by using abortifacients.

This goes much deeper than “she wants an IUD.”

Good points… I have been wanting to do nfp for a long time now, but it takes two… but your right this is a situation where I can lead in our marriage but its hard because I can’t force her

I think there is something deeper going on than the fear of stones and PPD (which is very, very common for many women). In my humble opinion, the fact that she refuses to educate herself in any way about NFP and that you have been intimate so few times for a marriage of 8 years points to a deeper issue. Maybe speak with your priest and he can suggest some counseling for your wife from a woman who may have faced similar challenges?

I have kidney disease and have had more kidney stones than I could count. During pregnancy, there is a very strong link between the extra calcium in the prenatal vitamins and the stones. Soda (coke, pepsi, sprite, etc) also plays a part in the formation of stones. But I’d guess if she only has gotten them while pregnant, it’s the prenatals and her doctor can suggest alternatives to help with tgat.

I’ve never used any type of birth control so I can’t tell you what it feels like personally. But I have several non Catholic friends who have used it and out of the 5 of them, two have had complete hysterectomy in the last 2 years, they all have dealt with at least one ovarian cyst. If your wife thinks kidney stones are bad, they are a walk in the park next to an ovarian cyst. I’d choose a million stones over one cyst

I hope you are able to resolve this in a way where you both are able to truly feel God’s grace from having complete faith in Him to do what’s best for you, I know that is really difficult for most of us!

Consider visiting with a NaPro trained physician or even flying to Nebraska to go to the Pope Paul institute. Perhaps a standard well visit/physical with ample time to discuss health concerns, family planning, and pregnancy concerns would give her ample time to make a really informed decision about NFP.

I only read the first page of posts on your topic, and no one mentioned it, so…

You should really talk to a good priest about this. If your wife is using birth control, I’m pretty sure it’s a sin to have relations with her. Even if you are against her using contraception, unless it’s for medical reasons, you are knowingly engaging in a sinful act if you have marital relations while she is using contraception.

I’m not 100% sure, but you really should talk to a priest or apologist ASAP!
