Wife wants to return to work

There’s no room in society anymore for a stay-at-home mom. That career has been attacked by satan.

I would suggest she join mom groups or PTA or something. Maybe she can be the school nurse? A red cross volunteer?

I would be fearful of any outsider teaching my kids.

Maybe God has an amicable solution.
that’s a bit harsh. I kept small children in my home for years so that I could stay at home with mine. People were grateful that I took them to morning Mass, that I treated them as my own. I was a good babysitter. You needn’t fear Catholic sitters.

OP, you seem concerned with how others will view your wife going back to work. I think it’s time to give more concern to your wife’s feelings than others external to your marriage. As others have addressed, there are many reasons a woman may like to go back to some part time work. Anyone who would view this as a negative reflection on you barely deserves your attention on this matter.

Yet I am supposed to be supportive when my wife says she only wants to mother my kids part time?
Are you saying that you are only a part time dad? Because having a full time job means you are not at home much. How many hours a week do you spend with the kids?

I am guessing that you don’t feel that way. You love your kids and take care of them and are a good dad. You are a full time dad. Right?

In the same way she will always be a full time mom. 20 hours a week will not change that.

I have recently started a part time job and I LOVE IT!!! Why? Because my brain is back to use in its old way, because I interact with adults, because what I do is interesting. My kids are at kindergarten during those hours, just for the morning. I’m happy. They are happy. My husband is happy because I am happy. I can honestly say that now I have more patience with the kids and feel like I’m giving them more.

Just try to spend a year being a stay at home dad and I’m pretty certain you’d understand why she wants to do something outside the home. 😉

Provided this isn’t a troll thread, though I’m pretty sure it is, there’s your solution. Speak with the wife and see if she’s cool with waiting to go back to work until kids are in pre-k or kindergarten and then work while they’re at school.

Kids are gone for 6+ hours during the day when at school. Plenty of time to work a half-day at a doctor’s office and be home in time to see them when they get back.

For those of you commenting about the children being raised by strangers or her being a part-time mom, stop and think about this. Nursing is not a Monday-Friday, 8-5 career where one has to send their children to daycare if they choose to return to work. It’s very flexible in scheduling, especially when one works part-time or PRN (as needed) shifts. I have worked weekends, evenings, and nights. 4 and 8 shifts. I did this so my husband and I DID NOT have to use outside childcare. We even managed to homeschool while I worked those part-time shifts at the hospital. Besides, the husband stated that the kids attended Catholic school, at least in using the plural with “kids”, we could reasonably assume at least 2 of them are school age (he mentioned the oldest as being 8), so this whole notion of “someone else raising the kids” needs to fly right out of the window, because at least 2 of the kids are in the care of people who are not their parents during school hours. That’s at least 6-8 hours in someone else’s care. If she goes in to work a couple of hours before hubby gets home and a close friend or parishioner is watching the youngest ones until Dad picks up the child, is that any different than the older ones being in school? I don’t think so. Is she a part-time mom to the oldest kids when they are in school? No, she is not! Besides, she may be looking at shifts that wouldn’t even necessitate outside care, like I mentioned my experience when I worked as a health care professional.

Or plenty of time to catch a night shift at a hospital the night before and then get some sleep once the kids are off to school the next morning. She could even start back to work before the youngest is in pre-k by working on a weekend or a 4 hour evening or night shift during the week. I did that for many years and we didn’t have to use outside childcare. I even managed to homeschool while I worked such shifts. Healthcare provides much more flexibility than a usual office job.

And it’s in crazy high demand. Your schedule doesn’t sound like you had much time for sleep though!

Weekend night shifts mostly. Go in on Friday and Saturday at 11pm, back in cozy bed by 8:30 on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Went to a lot of Saturday 5pm and Sunday evening Masses during those years. Other times it was a Saturday evening from 3p-11p and one or two 7p-11p shifts during the week.

Many nurses work two or three 12 hour shifts a week. It is very possible to work these shifts and not miss any time with the kids. I have been a stay at home mom since our 4th was born over 12 years ago so I understand why your wife may want to return to work. There are days I dream about it myself. It would be so nice to be around other adults doing a job that earns a little respect instead of being viewed as lazy by the world. Think about it, one of the first things a mom is asked is, “Do you work?” Stay at home moms definitely work, yet no one including many spouses acknowledge that.

If my husband did not acknowledge how much I do or how hard my job is, I would seriously consider using my degree, getting a job, and getting rid of the added stress of listening to him disrespect me. Being a stay at home mom is my dream job, but if I don’t get the respect I deserve this dream would turn into a nightmare very quickly.

Did you marry a person or a function?

If you lost your job, or got sick, or had an accident, would she have to leave you because you’re no longer the “provider”?

Actual living breathing persons develop and change over time. I’m pretty sure you didn’t mention the division of labor in your wedding vows. You did mention being faithful to the person, always.

You sound as if what “others” may think and your pride as a “provider” is more important than how the person you married feels every day of her life.

You say that being a provider isn’t easy, either, and no one asks you if you are fulfilled and happy. Then think of this as an opportunity to, say, spend some more time with your children and also get to be more fulfilled and happy - perhaps she could do shifts when you’re at home so you don’t have to hire outside help and children get to be with both their parents?

HEAR HEAR! 👍 :clapping:

Ok, do NOT let your wife into that horrible society out there called “career!” It’s NOT a career!!! It takes people hostage and ruins their marriages. You wife is being deceived. She doesn’t have a COMMUNITY of support as a mom!!!

Ask her to see a priest and see what he says. although, some priests have no clue how weird bosses/etc can be now, corporations who DONT CARE about 1. you 2. your FAMILY!!!

Make a DEAL with your wife. Say: Ok, honey you win. I surrender. You can have a “job” as LONG as: 1. it’s 10 hours a week OR 2. At school with our KIDS OR 3. It’s a volunteer job (horray, she can TAKE the kids too!!)

Seriously, your WIFE has no clue what kind of demon slave she is getting snared into. Even a nursing job part time is EXHAUSTING. Please, find some female friends in her life that can pull her out of the wreckage of employment!!! Lol. No, but seriously, if she goes back to work, it’s GOING to put lameness on the family. Have her try to do CHARITY. PRO-LIFE CENTER. What about caring for her own relatives, perhaps taking a few trips to see them???

Thanks for the laugh! You do realize that to get her degree and keep her nursing license she would have had to have experienced the long exhausting hours as a nurse, right? She knows exactly what she wants and who are you to tell her to do otherwise? You know, she can always quit a job - except, as it seems, being a 24/7 nursemaid to the children. Also, remember that the marriage covenant is about the good of the spouses and that there is mutual submission. Having the husband dictate how life must be run is not part of that equation since she is his equal and not a child or a slave. Yes, they had an initial agreement, but like most things that are neutral in themselves and do not involve morals, it can and perhaps in this case should change. Being a provider also means loving support of the true needs of the spouse. Just because working might not fit the “traditional” marriage pattern doesn’t mean it isn’t valid. Again, look at Proverbs 31. Only the very wealthy traditionally had the luxury of keeping their wives at home doing nothing but paying social calls. Our “traditional” stay at home mom model is not really traditional in history. Most women had to work their tails off as laundry women, farmers, maids, and in other jobs to feed the family. It’s not wrong for a woman to work and it’s certainly not right for a husband to insist that the woman limit her society to their offspring because of mere pride. If she needs to get out of the house to keep sane, then it is a no brainer for a loving husband to support. It’s not as if she’s leaving the house 24/7 and vacating her responsibilities.

I hope you never go to a doctor or hospital, lest you fuel the “demon slave snare”

Are you for real?

Are teachers lesser parents because they’re at school teaching YOUR CHILDREN while they’re away from their own? How about your nurse? Your bank attendant, your secretary?

I’m so glad that I have a husband who supports my professional ambitions, and knows that I will never be a full time SAHM- I NEED the adult interaction in my days.

Moms should stay home in my opinion and I don’t know what to say to a woman who finds raising kids and being a homemaker and wife boring and unfulfilling. My mom did it and seemed happy. Why would any woman want outside work?
Did you ever think that maybe they’re complex individuals with their own feelings, desires, and interests? You know… human? Just a thought.

Ok, do NOT let your wife into that horrible society out there called “career!” It’s NOT a career!!!
I absolutely, totally agree. Why, if I had the choice, I’d never work a day in my life!

Alas, I was born with an aristocrat’s sensibilities and a middle-class life. Blast my father, and his fathers before him for not amassing enough wealth for me to live a life of leisure…

How about a more realistic scenario.

“Honey, when we got married I was an accountant. I know you expected that I would always be an accountant. But after working in that field for 8 years I find that I’m desperately unhappy. I can’t stand it anymore. I’d like to go back to school and prepare for a career in another field.”

Should her response then be “No. You were an accountant and you will always be an accountant. You can’t renege on the deal.”

Or perhaps a better response would be “How can we work this out? Do you think you can go to school part time to prepare for your new career while still working? I’ll try to help by keeping the kids occupied in the evenings so you can study.”

And what’s with the part-time mother idea? Are you a part-time father? Do you stop being a father when you go to work?
Couldn’t agree more. You have to accept that people change over time.

I can understand why the OP might not like putting a 2-year-old in daycare but frankly, expecting a woman be a SAHM until the youngest is 18 seems ridiculous. What’s she going to do all day when they’re at school?

Do you mean moms or women in general?
He said he didn’t understand why any woman would want to work outside the home. He then goes on to reference his mother as an example of someone that apparently enjoyed it. So by his logic all women should have this inborn need to be the Leave It To Beaver mom.

He seems to be of the mindset that all women should have a collective, synchronized desire to be some subservient doting housewife that all enjoy cooking, cleaning, lying on their backs, and raising children while their manly husbands support them. That is absurd, and I can cite a hundred examples of why that is dangerous worldview.

While it’s true both men and women have biological differences that make it easy to generalize about gender (I do it all the time) but we are all individuals with our own personalities, thoughts, and feelings. Humans are complex- we have this weird way of changing; our feelings, thoughts, perceptions, and even beliefs change over the course of our lives. Our environment and culture help shape who we are as well.

Anyway- just because one woman loves being a house wife doesn’t mean her sister does. But both of their opinions could change in the future.

Women are human. They’re not just baby making machines with a dust buster that only exist to serve men- even if traditional men (and some women) wish that were so.
