Hello friends…

What is the Churches official position on websites which distort Catholic facts or Truths?

Like for instance has Wikipedia been given the “Imprimatur” by the Holy See and all things on it? I doubt it somehow but would like some help since I am trying to defend the faith on an Open Forum on facebook, which is a great way to evangelise by the way and build up your faith…

Thanks

Atour

P.S. I’m leaving the house in an hour so will be back to check responses later…

Hi Atour,

Wilkipedia is an online encyclopedia that is in constant revision. If you don’t like what it says, you are free to write what you think is the truth. Just make sure your assertions are supported by reliable sources and that you give references to those sources.

The Church does not have an official position on everything. It would be an impossible task for the Church to go around issuing specific condemnations of every single website that said anything remotely untrue about the Church. It would be like trying to plug holes in a dam with your fingers.

The Church does not give imprimaturs to websites. A bishop will give an imprimatur to specific written materials regarding the Catholic faith. Some of these materials may appear on websites (such as the tracts here on Catholic Answers), but it is not the website that receives the imprimatur. A bishop can only give an imprimatur for text that is not going to change. Websites (especially Wikipedia) change constantly. There’s no way to keep up with it.

Further, the Church doesn’t give imprimaturs to secular endeavors or to people who aren’t seeking them. The author must seek it out. And it must be related to faith and morals.

Wikipedia is a mixed bag. I wouldn’t trust it as my sole source of information, particularly on the Catholic faith. Luckily, with all the great Catholic resources (like the Catechism) there is no need to rely on Wikipedia for that information.

Wikipedia does not require reliable sources in subjective ideas, it just requires that someone asserted it. It is therefore true that someone claimed it, but it is not necessarily truth. I have seen articles where the majority of the body of the text is false opinion, but at the end of the article there is a statement that some scholars disagree with whats just been presented, almost as an afterthought. For some reason this is acceptable practice on wiki.

A search of our Ccom threads with Wikipedia in the title shows more than a dozen critical of Wiki accuracy and outright bias–many more comments in other threads are highly critical. I think Wiki bias is atheist, socialist, and universalist–right along with so much of our entertainment media and labor (including govt and edu). They seek control of everything–even history and Truth itself.
try this link:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_the_United_States
line 2- religions…perished in the US (nice start)
line 3-religions founded in US (???)
line 4-US one of most religiously diverse countries (???)
line 6-US 73-76% Christian (vs most surveys 80-85)
line 13-9% say religion most import (source: Voices from Russia/wordpress.com

I wouldn’t believe the date in wikipedia.

Wikipedia is basically someones opinion more than anything.

There is always a better place to find something than wikipedia.

Wikipedia is far better than it was a few years ago. On any topic, Wiki is a good start, and usually has valuable links to other sources.
