Will a Catholic who becomes Protestant go to hell?

As I understand it, Protestants may not necessary go to hell because they may be ignorant of the one true faith, whereas Catholics who convert to other religions are heretics and will not be saved. However, what if the Catholic is convinced his religion is wrong, say in the case of a Born Again Christian- probably because he was persuaded by members of that church? Does God allow for brainwashing and possibly not sentence his children to eternal damnation? I have a close relative who became a Born Again and I’m worried.
