Will an economic stimulus package help us during recession?

If the tax itself is unfair, then why is it also unfair to use legal means to avoid paying taxes?
The tax is unfair because the money is squandered. To avoid bearing one’s fair share of the load is also unfair. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

In a morally proper system, the taxes would be low, the money spent efficiently, and everyone would bear his or her fair share.

And what is everyone’s fair share?

And what is everyone’s fair share?
That is determined by their abilities – find me a man who says, “I must work harder, so I can earn more for the poor” and I will show you a man who is carrying his fair share of the load.

Find me a man (or woman) who says, “I could do more, but I choose not to” and I will show you someone who is not carrying his or her fair share of the load.

any tax collected from the working man to pay for congressional gym fees is unfair, or plane upgrades, or junckets

Does such a man (or woman) exist? Certainly, most people I know who are out making lots of money are not doing it because of their love of the poor.

Which of us could not choose to do more? What if the SAHM is doing volunteer work to help the poor? Why must all work be done in the marketplace?

um, I don’t get to choose the 38% that I’m taxed on commissions and bonus money I make–it’s part of my compensation–why should I have to pay more for my earnings in this genre, than I do as part of my regular salary. If I make $20k bonus in a year, I see about $12k–roughly…that is not of my choosing. Not sure how your statement correlates to taxation?

I haven’t found very many. On the other hand, I have found quite a few who feel someone else should pay more.😉

It doesn’t necessarily have to be done in the market place – but it does have to be done.

And sitting on the couch, drinking beer and eating chips while cheering for one’s favorite team, or one’s favorite government program does nothing to move the ball.

Just as there are people who think they gain merit by supporting doing good with someone else’s money.
Yeah, someone else’s money…hmmm…my kids have that problem with their spending of my and dh’s money. Maybe the government are just kids at heart.😛

I see the Senate wants to make a last minute change to the stimulus package that will include SS receipents and extend unemployment…

news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080128/ap_on_go_co/economy_stimulus

WASHINGTON - A top Senate Democrat unveiled a $156 billion economic stimulus package on Monday that awards rebates to senior citizens living off Social Security and extends unemployment benefits, setting up a clash with the White House and House leaders pushing a narrower package.

The last line was most interesting…

“The Senate measure restores a business tax break dropped from the House bill that would permit corporations suffering losses now to reclaim taxes previously paid.”

I thought it was the big bad Republicans who were in corporate America’s pocket?

I suspect the Senate will cave in pretty shortly. People are already talking about what they’re going to do with their money.

You think maybe I need to make some novenas?😃
You might want to get a few plenary indulgences, just to be on the safe side.

Don’t worry, I’m looking at about 10 trillion years in purgatory if I don’t get some indulgences myself.

A pox on both their houses!

None of this makes any sense to me, except extension of unemployment benefits for those who might really be in need. A tax rebate isn’t going to cure any fundamentals. It isn’t going to turn subprime loans into good loans. It isn’t going to stop a single foreclosure, or help anybody buy a house. It isn’t going to bring oil prices down. I guess millionaire SS recipients are going to get a rebate under the senate version, and I can’t imagine why that makes sense. But neither does the House/Bush version.

Oh well, I guess they all have votes to buy and want us dummies out here think they’re doing something for us, notwithstanding that we’re going to pay for it. This is like giving somebody a brand new credit card when he’s already up to his eyeballs in debt. Wonder if the Chinese are ready to buy the $146 billion in bonds it will take to pay for the rebates. Since most of the money will likely buy Chinese import goods, perhaps they are.

Actually, in my case, it will buy some Swedish import furniture and pay off some credit card bills. 😃

Ah, but you see, they’re putting both on your “government credit card”, so you’re just paying off one card with another and buying more stuff on credit. And the interest on the government card is compound interest; worse than VISA. Oh well, I’m swimming against the tide and I know it.🤷

Man this thread has taken off! I couldn’t agree more w/your post. Never really looked at it quite like that but reality is that you’re probably right.
