Can. 983 §1. The sacramental seal is** inviolable**; therefore it is absolutely forbidden for a confessor to betray in any way a penitent in words or in any manner and** for any reason.**
am i wrong in understanding anything? Can. 1388 §1. A confessor who directly violates the sacramental seal incurs a latae sententiae excommunication reserved to the Apostolic See; one who does so only indirectly is to be punished according to the gravity of the delict
please put a before the quote so that it is proper .The priest cannot say what was said in confession even with the person’s consent. The Supreme Court of Louisiana has just ordered a priest to testify in court about the crime the victim told him about, in confession. The victim has told the law that she spoke of the crime in confession to this priest, and now the girl and her family want the priest to repeat in court what she said in confession. The priest has not yet appeared for the court appearance, but his diocese, speaking for him, has insisted that he cannot give such testimony in court. He cannot do this or even say that such a confession occurred. If the court presses him to testify when he appears in court, they can put the priest in jail.
QUOTE=Paleocon;12356127]The priest is absolutely forbidden to repeat your confession in any way without your explicit consent.
Yes, some years later. How do we know what happened? Did the murderer ever confess to it?
Right, but the priest can act on the information with the person’s consent, correct? I’ve included sources above, but if you have sources to the contrary, please share. The priest cannot say what was said in confession even with the person’s consent.
