Will I be allowed to convert?

I’ll simplify a complicated situation:

I grew up Protestant; and while I’ve always had a strong Non-doctrinal draw towards God, I was generally non-practicing as a Christian.

A few years ago I married a semi-practicing Jewish woman. We agreed that any child we had would grow up Jewish. According to Judaism, if the mother is Jewish, so too are the children.

We promptly had a child who is being raised Jewish, though not orthodox.

Some time after we got married I began to ask deeper questions about my faith. Catholicism had slowly crept into me for 15 years though I never really thought of converting. However, with prayer, study and time, it truly is where my soul is going.

Now the obvious dilemma: my wife would not allow our child to be raised Catholic, but nor would she stand in the way of my personal conversion.

Question: would the Catholic Church allow my conversion even though I can’t promise the conversion and baptism of my son? It is my hope that he will naturally slant in my direction through his exposure to me, and make a personal choice as an adult.

Hi,

The Church requires that the Catholic do all in his or her power to rear the child in the Catholic faith. Right now it would appear that that power is quite minimal in your case. This would not prevent you from becoming a Catholic. You are in our prayers. Welcome home!
