My wife recently passed away. If she is in heaven, and I die and go there, will she see me and recognize me, and will I recognize her and others that have passed before her? Will it be a great reunion of friends and loved ones? Or will the beauty of God and heaven surpass everything else? This was asked me by an evangelical yesterday. What is the church teaching and opinions about this?

This is actually answered by the Creed–we profess a belief in the “Communion of Saints” which included (obviously) those in heaven. Because people in heaven are “in communion” with each other, they obviously can see and interact with each other. Just what that will/does mean in Heaven is beyond our understanding, and beyond our ability to put into words. Yes, the beauty of God will surpass all else–but that doesn’t exclude a relationship with others in Heaven. Our relationships with both God and each other will be perfect.

Hi.

This is a common question on Catholic Answers.

This Ask an Apologist thread asks and answers this same question through several CA tracts on the subject.

In a nutshell, yes, you will be reunited with friends and loved ones, but because of God’s overwhelming love, your relationships will be different.

You will know her, but you won’t know her as your wife. There is no need for marriage in heaven. The same will be true if your parents, siblings, children are there, you won’t know them in heaven as you did on earth. My mother-in-law had a hard time with this, she wanted to know her husband in heaven as she did on earth. Though, maybe it would be so she could say “Fred, you’re an idiot!!” 😃

Davy, I’m sorry for your loss. I’ll keep you in my prayers; I was widowed young too and prayer was immensely helpful…

I’ve not been Catholic long enough to offer any “official” advice, but it does seem to me that Heaven wouldn’t be perfect if we couldn’t share the joy of being there with our loved ones.

Thanks for all the answers. I have one more question. Are the ones in heaven aware of what we are doing here on earth? Also, I know we can pray for the dead, but can they pray for us still here?
