Will I ever see my cat again?

My cat, who is really just a teenager in cat years, has jumped the fence.

I have looked everywhere, and can only conclude that he has gone off to “sow his wild oats”.

Those of you with cat experience; will he know how to find his way back home, or, will I never see him again?
 
First of all: Put his litter box outside, or at least, just barely inside, next to the exit where he left from; cats instinctively will come home to use their box, when they are suddenly outside on their own, & the scent will draw him.
Don’t give up hope. Cats are amazing.
Do you have a pic that you could put up asking folks to call if they find him? That may help someone to re-connect you.
Tell your neighbors, & ask them to please look out for him.

St Gertrude of Nivelles, patron saint of cats & those who love them, help Ceil-1 to find her lost kitty. Protect him, and bring him safely home again.:gopray: Amen.

Some cats are just outdoor cats; they like to wander the neighborhood, but most of the time do come home. One of mine prefers to spend his time out in the yard (I don’t let him wander the neighborhood), the other prefers to hide under the bed.

Your cat IS neutered and vaccinated, isn’t he? If he’s not, the minute he comes home GET HIM TO A VET. You’re not only putting your cat’s health at risk, you’re putting the health of every cat he comes in contact with at risk, not to mention the innumerable litters of kittens he might spawn in a week.

I don’t know if there are that many stray lady cats around, but, I suppose they find each other, don’t they? We thought he was a bit young to lose his manhood, but, we are rethinking that decision.

They can be neutered as young as three months; I had mine fixed at six months.
 
And don’t forget the flea treatments!

If your cat spends time outdoors, the cat should be getting some kind regular, preventative flea treatments, because the cat can pick up the fleas from other animals.

Will he stay awayfor more than a day or two? I figured he’d find his way home when he got good and hungry.

I’m trying to determine if he’s lost, or if he just wants adventure.

Aw “Ceil” :console: My guess, is that he will be back 😉 Cats know where their food source is… and they tend not to wander too far from it.

We live off a really busy street and when our cat first showed up… he was only about 6 months old. He made it clear, from the very start that he was going to be an “indoor/outdoor” kitty. He is now about 3 years old, and to the best of my knowledge… he has never even attempted to cross that busy highway.

He knows where his food is. And he stays close to home. So… I think your kitty will show up again, soon.

Btw… our kitty has stayed away for 1-2 days. But he always comes back. I would also recommend having him neutered, if he isn’t already. Once our male cat was neutered… he really calmed down and stayed much closer to home.

Keep us posted on your kitty. And I’ll say a little prayer to St. Francis of Assisi… Patron of God’s Creation… that he will return.

Hers wandered and eventually came home (and another also showed up).

Ceil!!! :console: My heart goes out to you. I had this happen to our kitty about 6 weeks ago…I think it might have been that long now…he just scooted out one day, when we left the front door open. (my dh did it, but we shall say ‘we’)😉 😃

My dd CRIIIIIED…I cried. But, what we did was posted bulletins of pictures of him everywhere for neighbors to see…we even enlisted neighbors to help us find him…and lo and behold, one of our neighbors knocked on our door late at night, and said he was on their porch? And sure enough, we ran out and there he was!
I don’t know if we ourselves would have found him just walking around in the dark with flashlights…:o It took someone spotting him later at night, when things got quiet.

So, YES your cat will return, and when it’s busy outside, like between noon and dinnertime, he won’t show himself. Makes sense. But, when things get quiet, that is when they roam around more…so, I will pray that he returns soon!

The funny thing that happened to us, when dd and I were walking around the neighborhood one night, a stray kitty, mangy (sp?) and so sad looking, following us home. It was a distance! We walked far…but he followed us, and we took him in, and he’s been living in my master bedroom now for over a month. Yes, we love cats.

We have a song…when Saber our kitty returned…"We missed you Saber, where did you go, we missed you Saber, we missed you sooooo.’ LOL! Sadly, Saber still tries to get out now. I guess he really enjoyed trapsing around the neighborhood.🤷 We took him to the vet shortly after he returned…,and got him rabies shot, and found out that he was neutered? We took him to a vet in PA, who told us he wasn’t…very weird. But, cats like to roam, but really, are so good at tracking back home. He will come back–I just know it! Praying hard for you, I know it’s worrisome right now.😦

I’ve been through the missing cat experience so I know what’s its like waiting for the patter of those little paws and waking up in the night to feel only one furry body on the bed, instead of two.

The odds are in well in favour of your cat finding his way home. Hope he’s back now or will be soon.

My girl cat has never wandered - the boy has. The boy was away four days once and a bit longer the next time. I suspect he was either locked in somewhere or he was being kept in by someone.

The second time he went missing friends had to insist I went on my overseas vacation and I was thrilled to get a message a day or two later than he had arrived home.

Chances are the cat will come back. When my cat got out, I thought for sure she was gone for good. But after a day or so, once she got hungry, she showed up on our back deck. When we went out to get her she ran off. But she came back, and we left the door open and she just walked right in. They seem to know, magically, where home is. DOn’t leave food out for the cat, it will only encourage her to stay out. I like the idea about the litter box by the door inside. Just have patience and pray for your cat’s return.

I live in a rural area and once we let a feral cat go outside our house and she took off and was gone for almost a year. She then would pop up occaisionally when she found there was food at our house for another feral we had. She then decided to move into our garage and would wait outside our door every morning at 7:00 am waiting to be fed. And if I was late, would I get an earful! Then one day she disappeared, never to be seen again.
 
The prodigal cat has returned!

He came to the same door, within the fence, as he left.

Needless to say, he won’t be going out, again, until he has seen
the vet to undergo his “adjustment”. Lord knows, I hate to do it.

Thanks for your advice, everyone. Especially Zooey. I was really begninning to grieve over the loss, as silly as that sounds.

Shortly after arriving, and eating, he jumped into my lap, placed his paws on my chest and just stared at me, purring, for at least 5 minutes or so. I was touched by this.

Incidentally, I am the only one in the house the cat likes. The other members of my household are all males. I wonder if this is a coincicence.

Yay!!! So happy to hear it, “Ceil”.

How cute about the kitty only liking you! I know what you mean. I think our cat has “chosen” me as his mother. :rotfl: He comes to me for food, protection and cuddling.

I actually read, that cats exist in a sort of perpetual “kittenhood”. Even when they’re old. And they choose ONE person to be their mother, and you are in that role for life! lol. Awwwwwwwwww.

Does your kitty do that little “kneading” thing with the front paws? That’s a sure sign that YOU are his Mama! 😉

You mean that claw, claw, claw thing on the carpet? That is his favorite thing to do, especially in the middle of the night, lol.

I’ve heard that means they want to play/get affection, and it is most always at night.

He only likes to be cuddled when hewants to be cuddled.

He is also fascinated with water, running water in particular, which intrigues me because I have always heard they hate water.

BTW, would a second cat be a help or a problem, in your opinions?

Oh, noooooooooo! I hate the “claw, claw, claw” thing. lol. My cat, Spooky… is RUINING an expensive rug we have… clawing it. I’ve had to put training spray on the rug. Baaaaaaaaaaaad kitty. ,=^…^=,

No… I’m talking about when kitty is snuggling in your lap.

My kitty, will “knead” with his paws… on a blankie… or my arm… or the side of chair… or my tummy. :rotfl: Whatever is within his reach. I had read, that this is a kind of sign, that the cat considers you its “mother”… because kittens will “knead” while they are nursing. :o <that’s why I wonder… do they behave this way with men. You said your cat only likes you… and the others in your house are male 🤷 >

I don’t know about the second cat. I guess it depends on your cats disposition. I wouldn’t try it with our cat, though. He is “the BOSS” in our house. And in the front and back yard, too. He has been in many fights with intruding cats.

He patrols the entire perimeter of our house.

Our second cat, Ping, loves water. She’ll get into the tub after you take a shower and spash around. She’ll get into the bathroom sink and curl up in there and sleep. She loves water.

After my cat, Magic, got out, we got her a kitten for someone to play with. That’s when Ping came along. Magic would always beg for attention and we couldn’t always give it to her, so we got Ping to play with. That really helped Magic out in the long run. But at first Magic didn’t like her. That’s the same with any new cats you introduce though.

I am so pleased that your prodigal has returned.

My boy cat became even more loving after his “operation”.

Please give your cat a pat from mine and from me.
