Will most of us go to hell?

We read in the Bible “Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love” (1 Jn. 4:8 NAB), yet at present do some Catholics believe God can seem very harsh?

Is God a God who condemns humans to hell, whom he created with weaknesses and inclinations, for one grave thought, word or deed?

Is God, loving and accepting of fallen humans?

Is he the father of all of us, Catholics and others?

Is God a God of love and mercy, whose Son has saved us? Did the life, death and resurrection of Jesus save us?

Will he reject us for one mortally sinful act, in spite of a lifetime of service?

Will a Catholic who even once has looked at pornography, had intercourse outside marriage, practiced contraception, or had lustful thoughts, with clear knowledge and full consent, go to hell if he/she died without confessing to a priest?

How does one believe in a good God if he seems so unforgiving?
When is someone NOT forgiven? When they don’t repent.

When someone commits a mortal sin, what is their immediate condition before God? What if they die in that state?

I think whoever wrote the lyrics to Frank Sinatra’s song “I did it my way” will go to Hell.
Because it influenced so many people to be proud of choosing their own journey and rejecting God’s way.
So Christians need to sing “I did it God’s way”
I understand that Sinatra had the last rites before he died. So fortunately the words of that song “I did it my way” didn’t haunt his last moments on earth. As a result of receiving the sacraments, here are the words on his head stone from another famous song of his.

"“The Best Is Yet To Come.

Jesus gave us the answer to the question of the thread,

Luke 13:23-28 , Lk 13:23-28 RSVCE - And some one said to him, “Lord, will - Bible Gateway

Why only a few are saved? Jesus said, because wickedness is multiplied, most mens love will grow cold. Those who endure to the end (the few) are saved. That’s been true since Adam and Eve. When the gospel is preached throughout the whole world, as a testimony to all nations; then the end of the world as we know it will come.
Mt 24:12-14, Matthew 24:12-14 RSVCE - And because wickedness is multiplied, - Bible Gateway

No, most of us will not go to hell. Most of us will spend a time in purgatory, though.

God is so pasasionately in love with us, and so clever, I’m sure He convinces the vast majority of people to repent before death.

It seems most here believe that one mortal sin, not confessed, condemns one to hell for all eternity.
If his is so how can God be considered good, just, loving and/or merciful?
“God, I know this action I wish to indulge in (adultery, murder, rape, robbery, theft, blasphemy, idolatry - pick your favorite) is something that gravely offends you. So much so that if I indulge myself, I will cut myself off from you and your Love. But you know what, I don’t give a %&*(#$. I want to do it anyway, regardless of what you want. Why, because I know better than you what is good for me. I want to do this thing, I know it will cut me off from you and your love, I choose it willfully and with full knowledge of the consequences. So I am going to do it, and you and I are through.”
That is the thought process of a mortal sin. Realistically, how many of us go through that mental gymnastic when we do wrong? And if someone as limited as I can understand that, how much more does God know the secret of the heart?
Someone once said that he thought committing a mortal sin is maybe the hardest thing for a human being to do. The hardest?, well maybe not, but close???

1st Allow me a=to answer your OPQ

YES, most of the world’s population for a number of reasons seems so far to have self-selected hell for their eternal destination

God can accurately be defined as “God = all good things Perfected”

”Is God a God who condemns humans to hell said:
opps

GOD does NOT condemn anyone to hell. Heaven and hell are BOTH personal choices we make by our life choices

”Is God said:
Hmm, if you’re asking “CAN GOD overlook man’s sins”?
It depends: God can and does overlook “overlook” our sins in, and through Catholic Sacramental Confession. 1: Jn. 5:16-17; Jn.20:19-23 {GOD’s WAY of sin forgiveness [see definition]

But NO God cannot simply overlook all of humanities sins and still be GOD. God in order to be GOD must in an absolute sense be Fait & Just, which like God ARE “good things”

”Is he the father of all of us said:
YES; but a “good father” corrects and disciplines his children.
” [1:
Is God a God of love and mercy, whose Son has saved us? [2]Did the life, death and resurrection of Jesus save us?’
[1] YES!
[2] As stated NO!

”Will he reject us for one mortally sinful act said:
YES! Because as God He must have a standard by which to judge all humanity equally; fairly and justly; further as a Just and Good God he OFFERS all of US sufficient Grace to be able NOT to choose to sin. God also offers those in His One True Church Mt 10:1-4; Mt 16: 18-19; Jn. 17:17-20; Mt 28:19-20; Eph. 4:1-7; the Sacrament of Confession, so that all Mortal sins: repented, confessed and committed to with God’s grace, not to commit again; can and ARE forgiven.

”Will a Catholic who even once has looked at pornography said:
YES; UNLESS there is a literally “PERFECT Act of contrition” AND CONFESSION was for some reason IMPOSSIBLE.

A BETTER question though is IMO:

Will He forgive Christians who dictate to GOD how He MUST {not will} forgive their sin?

Can God: see definition above; judge Protestants on a different standard than HIS One True Church and Faith? ONLY God Knows; but it’s a risky choice; NOT at all assured

”How does one believe in a good God if he seems so unforgiving? [/quote said:
Friend God is NOT at all unforgiving when we do it His way.

Is what I shared Biblical

2 Peter 1: 20-21
Understanding this first, that no prophecy of scripture is made by private interpretation. [For prophecy came not by the will of man at any time: but the holy men of God spoke, inspired by the Holy Ghost. AMEN!

Choosing yourself, your own POV, your own way, instead of God’s way.
GoodCatholic, thanks again for all your contributions. Your post 12 shows we do not have free will, if by doing our own will we are condemned. We are ‘slaves of Christ’ as St Paul claims.

If I am hanged if I do a certain act I am not free to do it.

IUf one dies with one repented, but not confessed mortal sin, one goes to hell, unless one has perfect contrition, which is almost impossible to have, according to traditional teaching.
I don’t recall the “Good Thief” going to confession. I don’t even know if he “repented.” He did seem sincere though so maybe that was perfect contrition, or maybe he was just delirious and scared out of his wits. But somehow, he managed to “return home.”

There have been quotes from popular songs here.
May I quote what Rosemary Clooney sang in 1955?

Let conscience be your guide
Don’t do things you’ll have to hide
Just do the thing that’s right
And go on by

When we say God is merciful, it means he forgives our sins if we repent, no matter how great the sin. But it does not mean he will forgive the sin if we are not sorry for it. So, my belief is that most people will not make it to heaven or purgatory. Look around you. Hardly anybody goes to reconciliation, and most people who are unrepentantly supporting abortion and other evils will have chosen the path they wanted which is to be away from God, ie. hell.

Think of children. When you ask them to say sorry, you forgive them instantly. But if they insist on their way, you will not forgive them.

I reckon the thief admitting to Jesus that he stole was probably a form of confession. Jesus was certainly a priest capable of giving absolution and it would seem to me that He did just that.

Of course, we also don’t know if the thief’s sins were mortal. He could have been stealing to feed his hungry family, with full knowledge of the bad penalty if he got caught. He could have stolen relatively small value items, since, as Jesus’ own execution proves, you could get executed over little or nothing. He could have had mixed feelings about his entire thievery career, or been coerced, or any number of things.

He is loving and merciful. He gave us freewill to accept or reject his love. If you sin and repent and ask for his forgiveness he will give it. If you choose to reject his love by committing a mortal sin and dying in a state of mortal sin that is your choice. God does not send anyone to Hell.

cannot save us, even though he wants to.
Not true.

Think of it like this.

Guys holding onto the edge of a cliff, God’s holding out his hand to pull the guy up to safety. But the guy, due to pride and arrogance, says I don’t need your help I’m fine where I’m at. God can’t make us accept his salvation. He can extend it, but we have to reach out and grab it.

Not a great analogy but it’s close.

So what is the point of conversion, penace and serving???
If one sin is forever?
