I stumbled across this interesting post in the Telegraph…

Will Rowan Williams join an exodus to Rome?
I’ve just got off the phone from a well-placed contact in Rome who has made the most fantastic suggestion.

Rowan Williams may well be among the clergy who decide to leave Anglicanism for the Roman Catholic Church, he speculated.

I don’t believe he will. Reading the article his reservation about becoming Catholic (Papal infallibility) is no small matter. Sure people have gotten over it in the past but I haven’t read anything (article included) which suggests he has.

I always assumed he was too liberal anyway to accept other church teachings as well.
 
Frankly the Article says next to nothing. What is there talks about things from several years ago.

Also his position as Archbishop of Canterbury would likely preclude him making any precipitous moves.

If he is seriously considering the Church he would likely do so very privately and reisgn his current post before making any such announcement.

I wouldn’t put too much weight on the word of a “well placed contact” or, as Jimmy Stewart remarked in “The Philadelphia Story”, “Or what the kitchen maid saw through the keyhole. Unquote” 😃

Seriously doubt he would put himself under the authority of one of the former CoE Bishops who were recieved into the Church today.

And quietly the Ordinariate in the UK begins. Three former Bishops and 3 former Anglican Nuns come into communion. Jan 13 and Jan 15 will be the ordinations to Deacon and Priest. 3 other Bishops will be recieved thereafter.

Dec 31, 2010, was the last day of information gathering in the States. We pray an announcement soon.

Just because Rome comes a-knockin’ doesn’t mean everyone is receptive to the offer. The bishop of san joaquin, Bishop John-David Schofield, has had several folks from the Vatican approach him in the past three years asking him to come over to the other side; he has politely thrown them a “thanks but no thanks” and is quite proud of it. My rector and most clergy around here in the Anglican diocese didn’t consider the ordinariate for one solitary second as an option.

Rowan is far, far too liberal and a leftist egg-head to take up such an offer. And I think Father Mark is correct about the pastoral situation were he to convert. His bishop would be…😛

Rome didn’t come knocking, the Anglicans came to Rome.

Rowan Williams is no John Shelby Spong.

It is interesting speculation and amusing to contemplate but I doubt he would make the journey. The Archbishop is catholic but that has a wide meaning within Anglicanism. In his version, I believe he supports women priests and Bishops.

On the other hand the first three Bishops and their wives, along with the youngest nuns from the Anglican order at Walsingham were just received into the Catholic Church today. The setting up of the ordinariate in England is underway.
 
It has seemed to me that Williams reaction to everything going on in the Anglican Church has been to bury his head in the sand. I can’t see him going to Rome as he’d have to admit something is wrong.
 
Ithink people on this website have either been misled or self deluded into thinking this is a huge move of people. Is not a lot of people moving, not some grand conversion. Its maybe 5%. Its a loud minority though.

I don’t think anyone thinks it is anywhere close to the bulk of the church, however 5% of the third largest Christian organization in the world is a “huge move”.

People should remember though that the Anglican Communion has been through worse before.

In all fairness to him, so do many nominal Catholics. For all we know, in his heart he fully accepts all Church teachings but for political reasons, he may not find it expedient to break ranks. But then it’s gossip that I’m even participating in this discussion, just like the case with the former prime minister.
