Will the Catholic Church one day regain landmark buildings that were stolen from it? Structures such as the Hagia Sophia or Westminster Abbey?

Is it possible and/or probable that the right Pope of Rome will come along that will negotiate the return of especially historic buildings to the Catholic Church?

In the case of structures that are currently in secular hands such as the Hagia Sophia, how would it impact relations with the different Orthodox state churches and/or Islam?

I think it would be too controversial. Maybe if there was a historic CofE church with a dwindling congregation and the Catholic Church in the area was thriving there could be a case for it taking it over but I don’t see it happening with Westminster Abbey

No it will not in the vast majority of cases. If the Church badly wants one back it can just build another.

Hagia Sophia belongs to the Patriarchate of Constantinople. Don’t be greedy now.

The Patriarchate of Constantinople was also Catholic long before the Orthodox state churches existed.

And for example which state Churches? Georgian Apostolic Orthodox Church was found in 5th century, and became Patriarchate in 1010, and is still in communion with Constantinople, or Orthodox Church of Cyprus was found (Gained Independence) at the 3rd Ecumenical Council in 431 (Canon which Rome ignores just for the fun of it), and the Church still exists and is in communion with Constantinople.
National Churches are actually older system than the Rome’s central structure system with the Collage of Cardinals.
So, the Orthodox Church has older Ecclesiology and unchanged Creed, both of these are according to the Canons of the Ecumenical Councils.
So saying Orthodox are not Catholic is at least immature approach.

As compared to the Catholic Church which was founded on Pentecost, c. 33 AD.

Will the Catholic Church one day give back the Mosque Cathedral at Córdoba?

It was found in Jerusalem in 33AD - Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem. And now what? lol

I suspect something could be worked out. Of course they’ll have to show some good faith on their end – like moving their Dome of the Rock and its ostentatious gold roof.

St. Peter was St. Peter, Church cant be just one Apostle, 1 Christian equals to none Christians, that is Latin Christian wisdom, not Greek. Pentecost was an event when all Apostles received the Gift of the Holy Spirit. The oldest Christian Community was in Jerusalem of course and was led by Apostle James as their First Bishop. (Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem)
St. Ignatius of Antioch teaches us (Successor to Peter and Paul as Bishop of Antioch) (Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch) that full Church (Catholic Church) is Bishop, Priests and Laymen, so the oldest Church is in Jerusalem, not Rome. And the Church of Jerusalem (As well as Church of Antioch) remained in Communion with the Patriarchate of Constantinople and broke Communion with the Patriarchate of Rome for attempting to impose aggressive innovations on the Eastern Patriarchates and even it’s authority.
So you see, you cant play the game “of being older” than the Orthodox Church.

And by the way, St. Peter was the Bishop of Antioch long before he went to Rome. In other words, Eastern Church is older than the Western Church.

The Roman Church would not even attempt to take back the Church of Holy Wisdom unless the Eastern Orthodox were back in full Communion with us.

If tomorrow the authorities of Istanbul (read: Constantinople!!) gave the Pope the deed to Hagia Sophia, then overmorrow the Pope would be on the phone with the Ecumenical Patriarch signing the building over to him.

I agree. Though having a magnificent cathedral is a wonder to behold, the faithful can very well attend mass in a frescoed catacomb, like before.

The most important thing is to have enough priests. There is a crisis. It is not that our churches are being sold. The faith is dying, there are not enough priests.

No. And such negotiations would be diplomatically problematic, to say the least.

This is purely just my opinion, but I do think so during the period of peace Our Lady talks about in her apparitions at La Salette. That’s the time when the majority of the world is Catholic, lasting about 25 years.

The persecuted Church in Russia has been able to reclaim and finish the steeple on the beautiful, historic building in Vladivostok.

It is important to remember that landmark buildings are merely man-made objects built upon land which is divided by man-made lines. As the prophet said, this too is vanity.
