Will the Holy Father give you his white zucchetto?

If you’d like a very nice papal souvenir, bring a brand new white zucchetto with you when meeting the Pope. His Holiness will trade his for yours.

I have never heard of this, and can find no information to support the custom. Also, the site refers to the Servant of God John Paul II, and so it seems to be dated.

If I meet the Holy Father, will he actually trade me his zucchetto if I purchase one from his tailor?

I doubt that there is any written Vatican protocol on the matter, but I can’t see that it would do any harm to try. The worst that can be said is, “No.” Upon being presented to the Pope, you might hand him your white zucchetto and then say, “Holy Father, may I please have your zucchetto in exchange?”
