I had always loved this particular setting. I know the words are slightly different now, but the last time I remember that my church sang the Mass of Creation was in 2011. I really thought the way they were sung were beautiful. Especially the “Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again…” Is this never to return? Or does it depend on area parishes? Just something I’ve wondered about.🙂

The Mass of Creation was revised according to the new English translation. See giamusic.com/search_details.cfm?title_id=11174

Many parishes went with completely new music when the new translation came in. I think the fear was that people would hear familiar music and revert to familiar words.

The “Christ has died…” was actually never part of the Latin texts. It was added by the English-speaking bishops’ conference to the Order of the Mass; therefore, it was excluded from the revised Roman Missal.

I never cared for Mass of Creation. The revised melodies sound very choppy, especially the Gloria. It should have just been scrapped.

R.I.P.

(even though it was revised. It’s not really been resurrected very successfully. It’s far easier for people to learn completely new settings than to try to re-teach them revisions. You have to remember, people sang it for 25 years. They keep going back to the old notes.)

I never cared for it either. But I don’t need to worry over such things any more. strictly EF for me.

Well good for you. I do realize this is the Traditional section of CAF, but since this doesn’t apply to you, why did you feel the need to respond anyway? Another opportunity to show some air of moral and liturgical superiority?

My parish is using it now for Advent. It depends on the music director’s and pastor’s choice. We use several mass settings that varies seasonally. I appreciate being able to sing with this variety, rather than use the same mass for a long period of time.
