I just saw news regarding Pope Benedict’s new installment in his series titled Jesus of Nazareth. With a publication such as this, is the Pope speaking ex cathedra? In other words, is this an infallable statement? Or is the Pope simply presenting a theological analysis and giving a professional opinion on the subject?

As Pope Benedict XVI made clear in the first installment of Jesus of Nazareth, he is not seeking to exercise magisterial authority but to offer his own theological reflections and the fruits of his own study of the person of Jesus. Given that Pope Benedict is widely acknowledged as one of the foremost Catholic theologians of the 20th and 21st centuries, that analysis should be respected and treasured by Catholics, but it is not considered to be an infallible statement.
