I have been repeatedly hammered by non-Catholic friends about this. “The pope is complicit in the death of everyone in Africa who contracts HIV.” That sort of thingOf course not, and especially not for AIDS prevention. From a technical standpoint, the condom has naturally occuring voids which render it permeable to the AIDS virus, which is many times smaller then the voids.
I have a copy of an article from the Journal of Rubber Chemistry discussing these voids. I have another article which studied the effectiveness of AIDS prevention using condoms among couples where only one partner had AIDS. The condom use merely dalayed the transmission by a year or so. All previously non-infected partners became infected…
To minimize the spread of HIV the condom would have to be fitted in a way to prevent the sperm leaving the latex. ]
Minimize is a key word. Why would a husband want to be satisfied w/ minimizing the risk to his wife? Shouldn’t he want to protect her completely?
“Honey, I love you, but only enough to reduce the chances that you get HIV.”
“Sex is so important that you should be willing to contract HIV so I can have pleasure.”
“We could both end up with HIV, so who would you like to have custody of the kids if we both die of AIDS?”

Do you expect an ex-wife to always provide true and accurate information about her ex-husband in a well-meaning and objective way? Do you expect that bully in school to be nice to you today just because he can? Would you ask a meth-addict to house-sit for you while you are on vacation for two weeks? Most people would not.Several people echoed the above response. I have a problem with it. While it is true that a person who left his order, or the Church altogether, might have a motive to decieve, that is in itself no proof that what he says is false. The truth or falsity of a charge is what it is regardless of the motive of the person making it.
(Conversely, a person may have pure motives and still be wrong. Motive and truth are separate issues.)
Condoms could be proven to be 100% effective and they would still be wrong to use. The point is not about efficacy. U2’s Bono made an interesting comment to an Australian TV presenter (Andrew Denton), when asked if it was the Catholic Church to blame for the AIDS in Africa tragedy. Bono said that the Catholic Church is conservative, and somebody else should hand out the condoms. And he noted how awful it would be if our Nuns handed condoms out to our children.… Is it possible for the Church to allow condom use? To minimize the spread of HIV…
