Will those who crucified Jesus be held accountable for it at the judgment?

And when they came to the place which is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.
(Luke 23:33-34 RSV-CE)

The passage above says that Jesus asked His Heavenly Father to forgive those who crucified Him. Does this mean that they will not be held accountable for crucifying Him at the Last Judgment? Are they already forgiven for this grave sin even though they probably didn’t ask for forgiveness?
 
Saul persecuted the early Church and stood by as Saint Stephen was stoned to death, and arranged for as many early Christians to be imprisoned.
He repented, as who else in those early days may have,
thus, renamed as Paul, he is a great apostle of the Church and writer of several of the epistles in the bible.
We can have no certainly, in any age, of the ultimate fate of any soul, whether or not they had final repentance.
Only God knows.
Anyone who torture and murders any person, is torturing and persecuting Christ [see Matthew 25 verses 31-46] is in His eyes, doing thus to Him.

We cannot know the fate of souls for certain. Only God can, but our dear God please bring all sinners to repentance and acceptance of the salvation that Jesus obtains for us, and for them

Thanks Trishie. I guess what I am asking is if those who crucified Jesus were forgiven when Jesus asked His Father to forgive them or if they still needed to be baptized in order to be forgiven.
 
I don’t know. The people who physically crucified Jesus certainly represent all of us who morally crucified Jesus.

It may not be that Jesus is asking God to change somehow, and to forgive instead of condemning. Jesus’ words indicate the significance of his actions (I think). We are all forgiven for our sins. Salvation goes to those who consequently live by faith.

I would take the Lord at His word. I can only assume they were pardoned for this.
 
What makes you think that Jesus was only praying for the people who were the immediate cause of His crucifixion?

He was talking about all of us, from Eve and Adam to the last human born on earth. The only person He wasn’t praying forgiveness for was His mom. All the rest of us are guilty, guilty, guilty of His Blood.

They will be held accountable like the rest of us will be held accountable for our sins, that is what the judgement is about. Are they be damned? It is not for the Church to say. Are they in heaven? The Church has not included them in the list of Saints. The bottom line is that we will not know until the day of the Universal Judgement.

Consider what the world would be like if Jesus hadn’t been crucified. What if those people had said, “Run away now, Jesus. We’ll let you go free”?

Surely what they did was necessary for God’s plan. Do they need to be forgiven for following God’s plan?

I would assume that meant they were forgiven for what they did to Jesus but it does not mean they were forgiven for any sins thereafter.
 
Well, they objectively committed deicide (ouch) but Jesus was right (big surprise) — they didn’t know that. In their eyes they were executing a blasphemer and therefore, by the rules of our own moral theology, could not be held culpable for said deicide due to ignorance.
