Nothing magical about it. A careful historical study of the Crusades indicates that they were necessary to save lives. The unfortunate effect that they also involved taking of life is covered by the “double effect” principle which is also seen in our times as the right to defend oneself from danger of death. Also, when did I say other wars were necessarily sinful? Some wars were, are, just wars. I remain a moral absolutist because I trust not only in my own reasoned judgment but in the reasoned judgment of Holy Mother Church. Then what is this magical standard that allows you to be at peace with the idea of the Crusades while considering other murders and other wars sinful and somehow remaining a moral absolutist?
The Crusaders lacked our luxuries of security, mutual ‘tolerance’, etc… When was the last time that we in the United States were in danger on our own soil from sudden death and destruction (houses and fields burnt etc. leading to starvation and/or disease)–you have to go back to the Civil War on a broad scale, which is nearly 150 years ago, outside any ‘personal’ history even if your great great grandpappy experienced it. “Mutual tolerance” of slavery worked for what, 200 something years, before breaking down. “Mutual tolerance” of Muslims/ Christians lasted about the same time. If you can argue that it was necessary for people in 1861 to ‘fight’ for either states’ rights or for black freedom, or a combination of both, then you can see that a fight for the right to live and worship as a Christian would have been necessary at the time of the Crusades.
Now of course, you might say that the North and South “should have worked it out” without recourse to violence. That would have been ideal, but once one group refused to listen, what would you have the other do? It was the South which ‘fired first’ and then things were inevitable.
It was the Muslims who continued on with their swords and jihads. Do you really think that if we had not won in the 15th century against the Muslim Turks, if we had ‘beaten our swords into plowshares’ that life would have been all roses and lollipops and we’re all one big happy family?
Do you consider World War I or World War II just? How about the Revolutionary War?
