Here in the US, I think you’d be hard pressed to find anyone that knows about this tradition. Let alone anyone that has participated in the last century.

We have this in Croatia
Except Carnival at that time, it is common for children to dress interesting costumes, go door to door asking for candy, reciting songs etc.
