Here in the US, I think you’d be hard pressed to find anyone that knows about this tradition. Let alone anyone that has participated in the last century.
Begging for cakes door to door on the eves of feastdays is an ancient Catholic practice, which was most prominent on, (yes, you guessed right) All Hallows Eve.
Trick or Treating descends directly from this practice.
