Will you leave your ash on your forehead all day?

I work in a monastery on Wednesdays so I leave them on. Once, my wife pointed out that I had a smudge on my forehead, then caught herself before I could answer, and said « oh… ».

I like to leave them on but I’m a housewife so I don’thave to go to a secular job with them on. Not going anywhere today except my parish Fish Fry where everybody will be wearing them.

I sing in the choir, so I have no choice but to go at the end of the day. AT other times past, I have worn them all day.

What strikes me as odd, though, is that, after all these years of seeing people with ashes, lots of protestants still ask what they’re for or just tell one that he has a smudge of dirt on his forehead. And some of them even have “Ash Wednesday” services! Don’t they ever wonder what the “Ash” part of Ash Wednesday is?

Yep, all day… until I forget and rub my forehead… 😉
Which is what happened today, while staring at the computer screen at the library office at the abbey. I rubbed my forehead and thought “I wonder why my forehead seems so gritty, like I just swept a chimney or something… oh yeah… it’s Ash Wednesday”.
