Will you say Grace after dinner today?

I just became aware that there is a prayer for after meals. From Fr F.X. Lasance " My Prayer Book" is the Grace before and after meals. I remember my father saying grace before meals, exactly as the one below, but I don’t recall hearing the after meal prayer.

Anyway, I’ll be the only Catholic at our Thanksgiving meal today, and I think I’ll hit them with both of them.

Grace…
Bless us, O lord, and these Thy gifts which we are about to receive from Thy bounty through Christ Our Lord.

Amen.

After meal…

We Give Thee thanks, almighty God, for all Thy benefits, Who livest and reignest world without end.

Amen.

Vouchsafe, O Lord, to reward with eternal life all those who do us good for Thy name’s sake.

Amen.

Let us bless the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

V. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

R. Amen.
 
Its not as common as the “Bless us, O Lord…”, but there is indeed a prayer after meals. I should probably memorize it :gopray:
 
yes I will be at the monastery this weekend, and that is the practice at meals there, grace before and after meals (as well as silence, table reading etc).
 
Some people always add* “May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.” * to their grace after meals prayer. It’s a good way to be sure you pray for the Holy Souls every day.
 
I know this is way after Thanksgiving but I just found this thread, and the prayer after meals is still a relevant topic. Our family almost always includes an after meal prayer. We do say the before meal prayer wherever & whenever but don’t include the after meal prayer if we have a large group over (hard to assemble everybody again).

"We give thee thanks for all thy benefits O Lord Who lives and reigns for ever and may the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace."
 
I often forget to say grace after the meal, but it seems just as important to thank God as is does to ask his blessing, so I add the thanksgiving prayer to the blessing before the meal.
 
I say:

We Give Thee thanks, almighty God, for these and all Thy benefits. And may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

So it is a bit different, but the same idea. I probably just got it from a different book somewhere along the lines.
 
I always say the before-meal grace. And on Thanksgiving, I change it to “We give Thee thanks, etc.” before the meal = but I’d never seen this after-meal prayer.

O my God ! bless this food and me, that I may commit no fault about it, and may all be for Your glory.

After Meals.
I thank You, Lord, for having done good to one who was Your enemy.
 
I did this when I was younger and skipped it when I came to live in the US. Then, lately, a new friend of mine said grace after any meal, I am trying to get back to this.
 
Our priest and some of the parishioners say the grace before and after meals in Latin. 👍
