Not for a long time if ever. Based on a scathing article in the current New Oxford Review deliniating a history of anti-Semitism in the SPPX which goes way beyond just bishop Williamson.

It is in the 03/09 NOR.

Some items the article points out:

“More important that Williamson’s own crackpot ideas, as Allen soberly points out, is the Lefebvre movement’s track record of open hostility to Jews and Judaism, starting with Archbishop Lefebvre himself”.

Referring to a 1/26/09 article by John Allen NOR goes on to note:

[Lefebvre] “identified contemporary enemies of the faith as ‘Jews’, Communists and Freemasons’ in an Aug. 31, 1985 letter to Pope John Paul 2”,

Further pointing out the history of anti-Semitism the NOR mentions:

“it did not help the Lefebvrist’s anti-Semitic image when, in 1989a Nazi-era criminal charged with killing seven Jews was discovered and subsequently arrested in an SPPX priory in Nice, France, after he had been granted ‘asylum’ by the Society”.

There is lots more. But one NOR observation that is to the point:

“This sad history makes it difficult to take seriously the SPPX’s effort to distance the group from Bishop Williamson’s comments”.

NOR is radically orthodox as anyon here knows. It is also not afraid to tell it like it is even when that means revealing “secrets” of supposedly orthodox Catholic groups.

The NOR was calling foul on the LofC for years before the recent story broke. They are now calling foul on the SPPX and positing the question whether a reunion is wise or even possible.

Seems like a waste of time, if the liberal (and anti-SSPX) press is going to keep harping on how much irreversible damage this bishop has done. I even heard about it on Rush Limbaugh radio show, though it was reported by a stand-in. And no, the stand-in was not attacking the bishop.

Bishop Williamson’s viewpoint on a matter of secular history, unpopular as it may be, should have nothing to do with his standing as a Catholic. It is totally unrelated to his faith.

Its more than the liberal press. The NOR is sounding a warning and pointing out that reconciliation of the SPPX is problematic at best.

They delve into the history too in this article:

“The Lefebvrists have long given the distinct impression that they have set up a parallel Magisterium - yes, one they seem to consider superior to that of the See of Peter”.

The NOR points out that Williamson is a convert from Protestansism and that what he is doing and the SPPX is basically protestant.

The NOR asks if Williamson’s comments were meant on purpose to derail negotiations. I’ve wondered that too and suspect that more than just Williamson will do what they can from w/in the SPPX to derail this effort.

It ain’t gonna happen I would say. You may have a few individual “return” but the SPPX has tasted power and IMO again I do not see them giving that up - short of concessions from Rome that Rome can’t offer.

I think it does have to do with his faith because it stems from a lack of the virtue of Charity with regard to the Jews. A lack of charity has very much to do with his standing as a Catholic. Deus es Caritas. God is love and Willimason lacks love when it comes to the Jews.

What you say makes sense. You may have more than a few returns (breaking ranks, if you will) as the SSPX still have a vast resource of well-qualified priests and (other) religious souls that would fit very well with the Pope’s wishes in expanding the EF. The SSPX as a whole may take on a new name if there are enough of so-called “defectors”. (The “X” does have a negative connotation, doesn’t it?)

It doesn’t and shouldn’t affect his ability to receive, and even administer the sacraments, but it certainly does affect his ability to lead.

In the article in Der Spiegel today, it says that Williamson has met with renowned holocaust denier David Irving and others since he returned to London

SPIEGEL: That hope seems unfounded. After his arrival in London, Williamson surrounded himself with people who have openly denied the Holocaust, such as the historian David Irving. Do you know why?

I hope it was just to “get both sides of the story” before changing his mind. Sigh.
