This thread is about the unbiblical, un-Christian practice of seeing wine as minimally/never necessary and toxic to the body versus seeing it as a good gift from God that strengthens and cheers us.

Groups tending to this unbiblical view:
  • Evangelical Protestants
  • Mormons
  • Jehovah’s Witnesses
  • SDAs
  • Some atheists
  • Muslims
  • Some Buddhists
  • ?
Now, I understand why anti-Christian religions and philosophies would hate pleasure, since they make themselves miserable by rejecting the love of God. But evangelicals, can’t you see that wine is not only one of God’s best gifts to us, but an honored gift for its praise in the Bible and its place in Communion?

*“The master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, ‘Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.’ This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory.”

"In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ "

“No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.”*

Is wine a gift without danger? No! But what good thing is? Look at some of the other contrasts in the Bible: Song of Solomon vs. David and Bathsheba, King David vs. King Saul, the work ethic of Paul the Apostle vs. Saul as persecutor, Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac vs. pagan sacrifice to Moloch, the gold of the Ark vs. the golden calf, Israel’s conquest of Canaan vs. Babylon’s conquest of Israel, true prophets vs. false prophets, Lydia’s charity vs. Saphira’s charity, etc., etc., etc. Why does this one gift have to be all or nothing?

The groups you list above should all read the Bible: 1 Timothy 5:23 “No longer drink only water, but take a little wine…”

Personally, I don’t care for the flavor of wine, but I do drink it on rare, rare occasion like when I’m with my godfather & he is insistent that I have his family’s wine: Spanos & another Family or the other Family & Spanos - don’t even know.

The point is…there is NOTHING wrong with drinking wine!!!
