Hey guys,

Now that I’m 21, I like to have a big glass of cheap red wine before I go to bed. It makes me tired, it’s relaxing, I have gotten to sleep easier without pet peeves bothering me, I don’t get as anxious at the end of the day it seems, and if I wake up in the middle of the night it’s a lot easier to get to sleep. Is there sinful behavior in this? I like to get a little woozy but it’s right before bedtime and so I can enjoy more wine and then get to sleep easier.

Yes. Life is too precious to waste on cheap wine. Drink good wine.

I happen to like White Zin and Blush… kool-aid wines. I don’t like tasting strong or bitter alcohol.

Oh, that’s fine. Drink what you enjoy. Just don’t skimp because it’s cheap.

Except as a Lenten mortification.

:rotfl: Absolutely!! It’s the cheap stuff that will give you a hangover as well. The only sin in what you propose is subjecting your taste buds to the acidic second press that passes as cheap wine. Fine wine is truly a divinely inspired beverage.

So what kinds of wine do you guys suggest? I am new at this game so I could use suggestions.

Be careful. Drinking alcohol suppresses your REM sleep and if you don’t have REM sleep, you won’t get a good sleep.

Ach, this is difficult, because:
  1. People’s tastes in wine differ. You may or may not enjoy what I enjoy.
  2. Wines even from the same winery and vineyard can vary from year to year depending on conditions during the growing season and other factors. So if you find a particular wine you like, that does not necessarily mean you will enjoy another bottle from the same winery but a different year as much as the first. Or you may enjoy it more.
  3. Wines vary as they age and depending on how they are stored. So a wine that is acceptable this year may be past its peak next year. Or it may not have reached its peak yet this year and be better next year, then worse again two years later.
The best advice I could give is to start with what you know you like. You like white zinfandels and blushes. So try different kinds of white zinfandels and blushes and when you find one you really like drink that until you don’t like it so much anymore. You can also get advice from a sommelier at a good restaurant or a good liquor store owner familiar with your tastes. When you find one who consistently recommends wines you enjoy, patronize his establishment.

Back to the original point though, While I do not think what you have described is sinful, you should not become dependent on wine to get a good night’s sleep. If you find you can not sleep well without a glass of wine, see your doctor.

Okay, here is a more grown-up answer: over time, your body will require larger quantities of wine to achieve the same result. Therefore, you will begin to consume more and more wine on a daily basis. Perhaps more significantly, you will develop a dependency on the feeling you need in order to relax. If wine no longer provides the feeling, you will want to find alternatives that will. This is when drug-dependency develops.

Elvis. Marilyn Monroe. Jessica Simpson. And thousands of unknowns.

The pattern is always the same.

Hope this helps. :tiphat:

Just a suggestion: don’t go so far as you “have to have it” before you go to bed. And always follow up with a big ol glass of water so you don’t dehydrate.

I definitely would not make this a daily habit. Alcohol might make it seem easier to fall asleep, but your sleep will be lighter, and not the refreshing kind that you need. Eventually, you will need more and more to get that “relaxed” feeling and you might become dependent on it.

Prayer will help you achieve the same results! Try the rosary instead!

As a side note, I occasionally drink wine and am not against drinking. But it should not become a daily habit. And finally, only drink it when you can afford “the good stuff.” I recommend a nice Merlot from California!

Sincerely,

I don’t drink myself but remember Christ drank wine with His Apostles. So if you can find some Apostles…😃

To someone who enjoys white Zin and Blush, Merlot is going to taste just awful. About 5 or 6 oz of wine per day is said to be good for the health. Much more and I think it heads off in the other direction. Peoples advice about becoming dependent and needing more and more for the same feeling is absolutely correct. It is never too late to become an alcoholic as some middle aged spurned wives and other folks could attest to. My mother-in-law was over sixty when she started drinking “My Irish Rose” fine wine. She did become an alcoholic or perhaps more correctly a wino. She wasn’t spurned, FIL died on her.

I would definitely say be careful. A large glass of cheap wine every night before bed really isn’t about enjoying wine. It’s about using wine as a medication. If you have trouble relaxing and falling asleep at night, I would talk to your doctor. I have recently divorced someone who was an agressive type A kind of a person who used wine to relax at night. By the time I left him he was drinking two bottles of wine on a work night, almost three on a weekend day/night. It’s a very slippery slope. I say save the wine for times that you are going to enjoy a special bottle with friends.

There is a difference between a glass of wine to enjoy and a glass of wine for medication. So as others have cautioned, take heed of the “need” and if you find it is the case seek help.

However, most of us never get to that point.

As for the type of wine, I can’t help. I like white wines. Specifically Rieslings, Ice Wines and Gewurtztrameiner. I’m also not a fan of any ‘dry’ wines and I avoid them like the plague. Semi-sweet to sweet wines for me. And price points from $6 to $12 a bottle for most of the gewurtztrameiner and rieslings gives you a good quality. Ice wine runs a little more and the bottles are smaller, but that really is a specialty wine even though it is from the same grape family as the rieslings.

👍 Stay away from the cheap stuff. For a while my doctor said to drink a small glass of wine before bedtime to improve my good cholesterol (he switched me to Niacin when the numbers didn’t improve). I chose lambrusco. Not too sweet but not bitter either. You’re right, it will induce drowsiness. Ask for it at the store. Remember, 1 Timothy 5:23: “Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.”
