Wine is okay, what about beer?

No Catholics in Germany? The homeland of the current Pope?
Bavaria, that nation’s largest state, is heavily Catholic, it is also home of some of the best beer I’ve had, and Munich, its capital, proudly calls itself the Beer City of the World. Munich is where the real Oktoberfest is celebrated each September and first weekend of Oktober. A personal secret: when I lived there, I bicycled to a small village where the major industry was a brewery that produced the “bier” that was served in upscale restaurants in Munich (better than the famous brews of that city, IMHO.)
And they too have a proud tradition of monastery-brewed beers. I fell in love with the Franziskaner (Franciscan) and Paulaner (Pauline) brews when I was there.

The more conservative Protestant branches sometimes prohibit alcohol.

Heck, Protestants in general (as well as Protestant countries) don’t have the alcohol consumption levels that Catholics and Catholic countries have.

Cheers, Papists!😃
Catholic-majority countries may have a greater total alcohol consumption. But it is FAR more common to see violent, abusive **drunks **in protestant-majority countries. As a VERY broad generalisation, Catholics seem to drink a little every day to be sociable, whilst protestants either never drink or drink huge quantities at once in order to get drunk and cause a nuisance.

As Belloc wrote:
“Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine
There’s laughter and dancing and good red wine -
At least I’ve always found it so -
Benedicamus Domino!”

i was born into the baptist church, but am now in RCIA and this Easter will be welcomed into the Catholic Church. what does being baptist have to do with it anyway?
Sorry for the rib. Funny I guessed the right denomination though. I am somewhat quite familiar with Baptists. I have some dear aquantences who are Baptist. A recurring theme I have found amoung the more conservative protestant denominations such as Baptists is thier exaggerated apprehension of alcohol. Being an irish Catholic who has spent most of my life within the Church…I can identify with those of us who;s nationality (irish mostly with some german for me) is closely tied to faith. For me being Catholic is almost as Cultural as it is a Faith. Mentioning that I assure you that I was raised in a Culture which included the presence of Alcohol which was considered one of the pleasantries in life. A pleasantry that is regarded as a gift from God. It would not be unheard of for a Keg of Beer to be present at a Parish Picnic. It never occurred to me as bad or “the devils drink” until I ran into conservative protestants in college who insisted to me that all priests were drunks and Catholics in General were drunkards. I assure you I am not accusing you or anyone else of such silly opinions but for the life of me the only time I ever saw a drunk priest was on T.V. and Never did I see anyone acting “drunk” at a parish picnic. O wait yes I did…the nun’s blood sugar got to low one time and she was staggering all over the place …but that is a different story.

Anyway welcome to the Catholic CHurch and I personally thing your Baptist background will be of benfit to your becoming Catholic. SOme of the best Catholics come from conservative protestantism. 👍

The late Pope John Paul II also drank beer in moderation and preferred it to wine. Apparently he especially liked a particular Australian beer, and Aussie bishops used to bring him some of it when they visited Rome.

As long as you don’t get drunk, or get obsessed with it to the exclusion of your rightful duties, any form of alcoholic drink is OK.
Gee you wouldn’t be a Aussie would you:D 😃 😃

I prefer Wine to beer any day of the week and twice on Sunday! Beer is okay but actually Rye Whiskey is my favorite (Crown Royal rocks!).

If I go out for drinks “with the guys” no I won’t have wine but I will have Rye and Coke.

Also champagne is great for special occasions

Always remember:

Beer then wine, you’ll feel fine.
Wine then beer, you’ll feel queer.

😉

Triumpha.

The best tasting beverage in the world?
It is the first pint of stout, after mass on Easter Sunday.

(not counting of course the Precious Blood of our Lord)

Well as an American of Irish Catholic descent and a Soldier I thank the good Lord for beer, whiskey, wine, scotch, etc.

I believe Hillaire Belloc said:

To exalt, enthrone, establish and defend,
To welcome home mankind’s mysterious friend
Wine, true begetter of all arts that be;
Wine, privilege of the completely free;
Wine the recorder; wine the sagely strong;
Wine, bright avenger of sly-dealing wrong,
Awake, Ausonian Muse, and sing the vineyard song!

Too right mate. (And having tasted North American “beer” I can understand your aversion.) But I heard the story told on TV by Cardinal Cassidy who spent many years working at the Vatican with JP2.

And as Pope Benedict comes from Bavaria I wouldn’t be surprised if he also prefers beer to wine.

Moving on…

Whiskey was apparently invented by Irish monks. They were trying to distill medicines, and learned how to distill other things, too. 🙂 “Uisce beatha”, the water of life.

I think the important thing is to appreciate alcoholic drink (like food or like any other thing), as a beautiful creature of God which deserves our respect and care. If we focus on that, we won’t be slamming it down carelessly or letting it hurt us. Because we are also creatures of God which deserve respect and care.

Beer is not only okay, it is the very reason civilization exists in the first place.

👍

i didn’t really know where to post this question so i will ask it here. Wine was given to humans as a gift from God and is okay to drink, but what about beer? i drink beer in moderation, and prefer it to wine so i am thinking that drinking beer is okay. any comments?

if the moderators know where a better catagory to post this under would be, please do so.
Drinking ANY kind of alcohol is okay, as long as it is in moderation. 👍
