Wine is okay, what about beer?

Moving on…

Whiskey was apparently invented by Irish monks. They were trying to distill medicines, and learned how to distill other things, too. 🙂 “Uisce beatha”, the water of life.
Whereas it was a French monk, Dom Perignon, who invented champagne 😃

With apologies to Hilaire Belloc

Wherever the Catholic sun spreads cheer,
There’s always laughter and ice cold beer.
At least I’ve always found it so,
Benedicamus Domino!

We attended a Southern Baptist Church for 6 years. I always said we left the baptist Church because we were bad Baptists. (We drank alcohol, played cards and like to dance) Those are things that are Southern Baptist no-nos or their traditions we called them Baptist-isms. Although I never heard it from the Pulpit, my daughter was taught in Sunday School that the wine in the Bible was non-alcoholic. That irked us-- Never heard of grapejuice bursting a wine skin. Anyway it also bothered me that they use grape juice for communion. I came from and Episcopal background and we had wine the alcoholic kind and I visited a Church of Christ once and they offered both for communion wine and grapejuice your choice. Oh I know it is probably mostly a Southern Baptist thing, in other countries Baptists don’t seem so hung up on alcohol. I had a friend from Jamaica who was a Jamaican Baptist and she said they love their Jamaican rum.

From a varied Protestant background. Now in RCIA and very happy. I feel like I’m home.

What about sake?

That’s probably my favorite. The cloudy cold kind is best, but the hot clear stuff is good too, and the cold clear has an interesting bite.

The best stuff tastes sort of like melon vodka.

Poor Buddhist monks–not only are they vegetarians, they can’t drink, either. No wonder they think life is nothing but suffering!

where i live, our mass services are in the morning times. to bad they don’t have one in the mid afternoon so everyone could either drink a mug of beer or enjoy a glass of wine! that would be interesting to me.

Why couldn’t you???

It’s always afternoon SOMEWHERE!!!

beer first thing in the morning? it would put me right back to sleep.

If the Benedictines created Benedictine liqueor then the Augustinians would be famous for Scrumpy 😛

Actually, Austin spirituality is something I can identify with. I like to go to Clare Priory at Clare near Sudbury on the Suffolk Essex border. It is a beautiful place for a retreat.

But just as Benedictines look as if they have just come out of Saville Row, Augustinians look as if they have just slept in their habits.

If I joined an Order, the Augustinians would definitely be my preferred choice 👍
