Does the term “wine” necessarily mean that the beverage contains alcohol? Many Protestant religions use grape juice (fruit of the vine) rather than wine saying the the Bible does not use the term wine when describing the Last Supper.
In celebrating the Holy Mass, can grape juice be used instead of alcoholic wine?

No, only pure wine made from grapes is valid matter for Mass. Using anything else would render the Mass invalid.

Most dioceses have a list of approved wines for sacramental use. Our diocese has about a hundred different choices of approved wines from various vineyards. Wines must be alcoholic to normal levels and be made entirely from grapes - non-grape wines or sakes are not valid matter. A provision is made for alcoholic priests to use mustum, which has a very low alcohol content, but only the priest may use it. Since Christ is present fully in either species, no one except the priest is required to receive both species at Mass.

Without refrigeration, pasteurization, or preservatives, fresh squeezed grape juice will do only two things: become wine or become vinegar.

In fact, what do you get when you squeeze a grape? You get WINE because fermentation starts immediately from the yeast on the skins. (Yeast floats around in the air.)

ALL Protestants had to use wine until a Methodist temperance preacher named Welch found a way to pasteurize grape juice.

If “all grape juice is wine”, then what you’re saying is
we can use Welsh’s Grape Juice is satisfactory for use in the Eucharist Litergy of the Holy Mass.

Yes or No
