When a friend in Kyiv called Israeli-American filmmaker Evgeny Afineevsky in November 2013 and convinced him to drop everything and take his cameras to Ukraine because “something was happening” there, he had no idea what he was getting himself into, let alone that it would lead to an Oscar nomination.

“Sometimes you need to be crazy, and I think we filmmakers are crazy,” he told RFE/RL shortly before the resulting movie, Winter On Fire, was short-listed for an Academy Award for best documentary on January 13. “I came initially for two weeks, and that’s how long we planned to be there. But literally after eight, nine days things changed.”

Angered at President Viktor Yanukovych’s abrupt rejection of stronger ties to the European Union in favor of Russia, tens of thousands of Ukrainians had gathered to vent their frustration on the capital’s Maidan square, the site of the Orange Revolution nine years previously.

What started as a peaceful movement quickly spiraled out of control as the authorities became increasingly brutal in their attempts to suppress the unrest and, in turn, antigovernment activists attacked police lines and occupied public buildings. Some three months later Yanukovych had fled into Russian exile, and scores of demonstrators had died in the process.

I absolutely detest the Maidan.

This is directly off topic and no one needs this “Kleptocracy” propaganda and is embarrassing as well that someone repeats such and can not control themselves; Russian journalists are killed, opposition politicians killed in Russia or found dead and someone expects us to believe in the Kremlin line which is brain washing. Thousands of protesters against a politician who changed diametrically.

Russia itself is chock-full of what can be called Neo-Nazis.

Sorry that one believes we are going to believe “Kleptocracy” propaganda.

Ukrainian Maidan Film Bids For Oscar Glory

Winter on Fire, a documentary about Ukraine’s 2013-14 upheaval that ousted President Viktor Yanukovych, has been nominated for this year’s Oscars. The film tells the story of the “Maidan” protests through the eyes of a 12-year-old boy and other participants. Director Evgeny Afineevsky and music composer Jasha Klebe spoke to RFE/RL’s Ukrainian Service in Kyiv.

Fake: Roshen Produces Chocolate Putin Bars**
On January 11 various Internet sites published photos of a chocolate bar with a photograph of the Russian President on the wrapper. These chocolate bars were allegedly produced at the Roshen candy company in Lipetsk, Russia.

Roshen is the candy empire owned by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

The chocolate bar wrapper done in an Andy Warhol type pop style shows a smiling Vladimir Putin feeding a calf from a bottle. The chocolate is described as “tender milk chocolate”.

The reverse side of the wrapper shows that the bar weighs 100 grams, costs 187 rubles – that’s about $2.40, and was packaged by the Roshen Confectionary Company in the Russian city of Lipetsk.

Fake “ Ukrainian Nazis” are really Russian Nationalists

The article entitled “Cutthroat Nazism: how Ukrainians were taught to hate Russians” was illustrated with a photo of a purported Nazi march. However, the march took place in Russia, not in Ukraine.

The photo Zvezda used to illustrate their article was in fact taken in Moscow during the 2013 nationalist meeting known as the Russian March. Among the first photographs that Google’s Search Engine locates when searching for Russian march 2013 is this man with this scarf covering his face. The picture is located in the Interfax news agency photo gallery.
